I carry a S&W .40 most of the time but I am thinking of treating myself to a new gun to carry. I am thinking of something in a .45, since I dont have one I like to carry currently. Whats some idea's to look at, keep in mind this is for concealed carry. Want something I can easily get holsters for and parts, I want to customize it a little. Like to stay at $1,000 or less but will spend more for the perfect gun.

Cocked and locked all the time. With both its thumb safety its grip safety, the 1911 platform is one of the safest to carry cocked and locked. Another safety most of the 1911s today have is a firing pin safety, which takes the safety of cocked and locked carry one step further. Most firing pin safeties are released by the initial stroke of the trigger, like in an 80 series Colt 1911. My S&W 1911 firing pin safety is released by the grip safety instead. This makes the trigger pull feel much better like a 70 series non firing pine safety equipped Colt 1911.

If a 1911 goes off unintended, someone's hand was wrapped around the gun when it happened. Just like every other gun out there, keep your booger picker off the bang switch until you are ready to shoot and there won't be any problems.

For comparison, a lot of striker fired pistols are internally fully cocked when you chamber a round. The Smith and Wesson M&P, Ruger SR9 and SR40, and the Springfield XD are fully cocked once you put one in the chamber. Glocks are about 2/3 of the way cocked. Most folks don't get the heebe-jeebies with these like they do a gun with a visible hammer, but in reality they are just as ready to go as a 1911 is with the hammer back.

Even though I carry a full size all steel 1911 in the cooler months, I myself am keeping my eyes open for an aluminum framed 4.25" barrel 1911. These are about 10 ounces lighter than an all steel 5" barrel gun. S&W makes one with their proprietary scandium alloy aluminum frame, and new prices on those run about $850 to $1000. I just barely got out-bid on Gunbroker for a used one that had a scratch on the frame last week that sold for $560. Unfortunately, I wasn't in a position at the auction end time to duel it out with the last remaining bidder.

Kimber, Springfield, and Colt make some aluminum frame 1911s, too.

My 1911 hides just about as well as my baby Glock does. Grip length hasn't really been an issue for me to hide when I am upright and an untucked shirt is hanging over it. What can poke out more so with the tupperware guns is the back of the slide when using a forward cant holster. The forward cant hides the rear of the grip rather well, as expected. But there is a lot more overhang over the rear of the grip with these vs. the 1911's lesser overhang. A 1911 doesn't have the squared off corner on the back of the slide to poke into your shirt, either. On the overhang issue, a revolver hides extremely well due to no overhang over the top of the grip at all.

On Gunbroker, typically at the end of the year, you will see more deals due to gun shops trying to lighten their inventories for tax purposes. We're not that far away from that time with it being November already.

I really like my H&K USP Compact .45, it is pretty accurate outside of 25 yards and dead on inside of that.

Its a little higher on the price end but it is worth it.

I think the hammer being visiblely cocked on a 1911 is what makes people nervous. My carry is a S&W MP40C and it has no safeties. As Gerald said, when there's one in the chamber it's fully cocked and ready to fire. And I have zero safeties and really don't want any. So, in comparison, a 1911 is probably much safer than what I carry.

I have a USP40 compact myself. I love everything about it except the first fire being DA.

I have had a couple of Kimber 1911s. They are OK. Both of mine had feeding issues with gold dots. Some work on the feed ramps was needed. After that they were solid utility pistols. Never something I wanted to carry.

I did shoot a couple of mags through a Dan Wesson CCO Bobtail a few weeks ago. I liked that pistol a lot. Not really up on the gun scene anymore so I am not comfortable recommending it for carry but It was the best shooting production commander slide pistol I have fired.

That said I carry a p40 covert or a G33 depending on what I am wearing.
