Effective Tuesday, Nov. 15, The Post and Courier will upgrade to a new commenting registration/sign-in system, Facebook Connect. To enable comments now using this system, change your account settings to use Facebook Connect to sign in. To do this, log in to Facebook, then visit your profile page and follow the directions in the "Connectors" area.

IMPORTANT: If you do not switch to Facebook Connect by the end of the day Monday, you will lose access to your history of comments, messages and photographs. On Tuesday, you will be prompted to re-register on the website, and you will be given a new user profile.

Thank you for your cooperation. We believe this change will help ensure greater accountability among users and more civil discourse.

Shit just got boring.

Should forums require you to use your real first and last name?

Finally a little accountability, some douchebag anonymous user on there accused my Dad of something, if I had known who he was I would have confronted his ass.

No. However, the usual suspects that go overboard just to see how much shock value they can bring to the table need to be kept in check and come to the realization that they can be held accountable.

What pisses me off is that most of the cowards spout off as if the P&C's stories are absolutely factually correct or they make idiotic assumptions (like we saw this week). Then, on another story they lambast the reporter as being full of shit and say what a fish wrap the P&C is (which I don't necessarily disagree with).

So yeah, I've got a problem with hypocrisy, racism, and defamation posted under the guise of "I can type whatever I want because no one knows who I am ". There is a fine line between being able to speak your mind and speaking your mind for the sole purpose of inflaming a bad situation.

The events of this week highlighted the issue here on CHP.

I'm willing to bet that if a few of these guys could have gotten a hold of some of the commentators over there it would have been a really bad day for them.

Although I have not done it yet, I have had colleagues subpoena the P&C for the IP addresses of some of these people and are going after them civilly.

Finally! People can't hide so easy. I wonder which ones will go away.

Good, like I said before, somebody left a comment that accused my Dad of doing something illegal. If I had their first and last name I would have gone after them for defamation.

I agree with you there, 100%.

I still think people who post civil opinions about certain topics (ie. religion, politics, workplace, etc..) should be able to do so anonymously. I'd draw the line on libelous comments, but not opinions. I believe calling someone a coward because certain people on P&C use a non-identifying screen name is painting with a broad brush.

Finally! People can't hide so easy. I wonder which ones will go away.

Don't be so sure. It takes 5 minutes to set-up a fake Facebook account.
