3 Gun Competition

With all the gun talk on here lately, I was wondering if anyone had ever shot any 3 gun stuff? I went with a buddy who shoots them all the time last Saturday to give it a try in North Carolina and had a blast. I was visiting family for Thanksgiving so I had no plans on going, so I didn't have anything I really needed. All I had was my pistol- I had to use his shotgun and AR15- and there is a bunch of other equipment I didn't have but it was fun as hell. I had no idea what to expect and most of the guys there were very serious. I figured out really fast that my bone stock M&P 40 was a piece of shit compared to the rigs these guys were toting. $3000-$4000 in some of the pistols???

Oh yeah, did I mention that out of 51 competitors I finished 7th? LOL, not bad considering I felt like I shot like shit. And I actually finished 1st overall on one of the 4 stages.

I should have some video soon.

Not sure if they do it around here anywhere, but give it a try if you get a chance.

well, since i was doing almost the same thing in my yard this weekend i would say that defintly looks like alot of fun.

7th is pretty good for walking up first time.

we went to one of the cowboy shooting events once, it was like SCCA or anything else, some folks have tons of money in their eqpt, and it does them no good at all,

and some folks have plain old eqpt, and place 7th.

there was a guy in Savannah SCCA years ago, had a VW Rabbit Truck, that DESTROYED everyone, even the 911's and stuff.

eqpt is ~1%, skill, practice, and nerve make up the rest.

i graduate this month, i am wondering if this would be fun next year instead of school :)

Shotgun was my strongest probably. It amazed me what some of those guys couldn't hit with a shotgun.

I am trying to get the Video of the stage I finished first overall on. It was 5 shotgun targets on the "texas spinner", 10 or so steel pistol targets including 2 shots at the last one at 50 yards and then 4 rifle targets, steel 8" plates- one at 100yds, one at 130yds, one at 160yds and the last one at 200yds. I did this stage in 47 seconds and that includes moving from one point to the next, to the next.

For improving the trigger on your M&P40, check out these folks here: https://apextactical.com/store/product-list.php?pg1-cid11.html Since you are giving other competitors hell with your bone stock M&P now, you're really going to make them feel bad for spending $2k+ on their pistols once you "tune up" your M&P.

Good job on finishing 7th overall! Especially 1st on one of the stages. That's awesome for a 1st time at it. I haven't seen any 3 gun matches around here locally, but I do shoot with some other shooters that routinely go somewhere in NC to do it.

I'm not one to travel much to go shooting, since there is are already pistol matches going on every Saturday either locally at Palmetto Gun Club, or up at Mid Carolina Rifle Club just south of Columbia. You don't have to be a member of either club to shoot the Saturday matches. You only have to be a member if you want to use their facilities on non-match days. A $15 match entry fee will get you 5 courses of fire for the match day. Expect to go through anywhere from about 70 to 125 rounds of pistol ammo for a typical match event.

Thats pretty cool. Placing 7th I would think is really good for never doing and not being prepared. Yesterday we were betting at the range on who could shoot better, Im starting a new trend....grudge shooting matches, lmao. I won every time until we bet lunch then lost by about a 1/2 in.

I love the competition as well. I have found that this competitive shooting hobby is much cheaper for me than drag racing was. 1iron might not agree, though. He admittedly shot so much between practicing and matches that he found out that drag racing was cheaper than his ammo costs! That's when you've got it bad! :poke:

Ammo cost is only a factor if you practice way more than what you would be shooting in a match. I don't really practice and never really have. Practice, to me, is just like running your car down the track all by yourself. There isn't any competitive thrill to a bye run. If I'm consuming ammo, you can bet it's against the clock and I'm shooting for score....Running the gun straight off the trailer, so to say. If you ever have to pull your gun out on the street, its going to be right off the trailer anyway, so you might as well be familiar of how fast you really can be in such a situation.

Don't get caught up in an equipment race when it comes to the shooting sports. I've seen guys with tuned up $600 Glocks and M&Ps hang with the big boy guns in Limited and Open classes that have spent $3k and up for their setups. I get a kick out of shooting my 8+1 capacity 1911 in Single Stack division up against those 20+ round magazine guns of the Limited and Open gun classes and managing to place right there amongst them in the overall standings. It's kind of like the thrill you get beating a healthy small block with your little 4 cylinder turbo!

If you are a good "natural" shooter, then you will do well at 3 gun. It is those "mechanical" junkies that just go nuts when you put a shotgun in their hands. Kinda funny to watch a grand master so to speak choke it up on the big gun....

I have never been to a 3 gun shoot, but have watched a few IDPA shoots up here. They are fun. The only reason I havent tried to get involved up here is that the course is terrible. I mean its great that they have a place to shoot but it really isnt maintained at all.

No not that I know of. I have a bunch of guns, and I have shot a bunch of guns, but it's always been at animals or paper at the range. This was my first time shooting in any type of competition like this- I use to shoot skeet when I was 16-17 or so. Thanks for the compliment.
