Don't know yet. Took it out for a ride, started hearing some faint knocking noise. Being the Shawnboy I am, I grabbed some third to fix its wagon and it let go. Limped it home knocking like a mofo.

They look pretty sweet only to get covered by an oil pan.
And most importantly they hold all the parts together if / when the block let's go. Lol
Exactly. In my case it was already on the motor so it didn't cost me anything lol.

So yeah, went to install the water pump and guess what? It doesn't match the timing cover. Gotta use the timing cover from the 69 block which means I get to tear the front of the motor back apart blast and paint the other cover and reassemble. I swear its one step forward and two steps back with this thing. http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-angry012.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

Well guys I've been really dreading posting this but here goes, my new motor came apart in a big way Monday night. Corey and I were headed over to summerville to get up with Hal and Adam for some roll race action and it let go on the way there on a third gear pull. I'm not sure what went wrong and Im not sure I ever will know for sure but basically the whole thing is scrap. Two broke rods, two broke pistons, fubared crank, cams ruined, one head is damaged and three bent valves. My initial assessment is that the number two rod let loose either because of a clearance issue or an unlikely rod bolt failure. The block is also obliterated. Anyway I thought I'd go on and share this news with you guys. I would appreciate if we could keep negative comments to a minumium I feel bad enough already. The title of this thread couldn't be any truer right now.

I totally feel your pain. I had a fully built brand new motor let go on the track after less than 2 weeks due to a clearance issue. Really sucks now but it's all part of the experience, you'll look back on it in a few years and laugh, and hopefully learn from any mistakes that were made so it will be bigger and better next time.

Just remember honey moody don't give a shit. Curious on the actual cause of it. Was the motor balanced by chance? Was it just a piston or rod failure and than all hell broke loose because of harmonics being off.

Thank you sir. I'm really just In disbelief right now. Corey and I were meticulous in putting this thing together. It was running perfectly up to the moment it let go. There is so much damage in here it's hard to know what happened first. It just hiccuped once at 6300-6400 and grenaded at 6600-6700 rpm.
Anyway out with with the the old and in with the new. I'm going to part this drivetrain out over the next few weeks. Colin has graciously gifted me the 5.3 LS that I sold him from Aaron's Tahoe. The plan is to back that up with a TH-350 with a single turbo for motivation. I'm gonna be calling on my LS friends on here for information and spare parts so keep your phones close to you. I'm flat broke now so any help to get me going again would be much appreciated and is guaranteed to come back on you ten fold lol.

Those marks are from the valves but are from after the engine let go. All other pistons are free from any valve contact. That rod just kept jamming that broke off piston into the head and valves.
I'm like you it ran too good and had too good of oil pressure to be a bearing clearance issue but you never know, it could have been.

did you clay the pistons at zero lash with no head gst to see how much valve clearance you had? you need at least 90 thousand to be safe. just asking. already done grenaded a few stock blocks and that is one problem i had. also the number two main check the webing in the block close.

Freddy I'll be honest I did not the piston to valve clearance on the motor. I didn't because this exact combo was fine in the old motor and I thought if anything I'd be even safer because this motor had a .020 taller deck height that I the previous 69 block I was running. I also went back with the same cam timing as before which was 4 degrees retarded. I really think the problem was at the big end of the number two rod.
