My truck is a 99 f350, it has been running flawless accept for the last fe weeks its been having cranking issues. Sometimes it spins over flawless and fires right off. Other times it spins over very slow, not fast enough to crank up, but if i let off the key and hit it again then it cranks perfect. and its intermittent so its very hard to track down. New batteries, so i either have it narrowed down too the cables or the starter. but how do i narrow it down to which?

MIne does that sometime too.Sometimes i jump in it and it spins over to slow for it to crank. Its still spinnin good but just not quit fast enough.I have found that its because the battery cables are loose. They dont feel loose but if you put a pair of channel locks on them they will turn just a little.I think they just get corrosion on them and the little turn lets it get all the juice...

Can you test continuity through a cable? Test at each end to make sure the cables are getting the power to the starter?

May want to try a starter solenoid. On my 7.3 onetime, I replaced the batteries, the cables, then the starter. Come to find out, it was the solenoid on the fenderwell. The get pitted and burnt over time. Its about a 12 dollar part that in the long run I paid about 800 dollars chasing. Its always the simple stuff that bites you. Good Luck.

i take a wire wheel on a drill and clean up battery ends.
I got a Fluke DVM if you need it.
if the crimp is loose on some wires, the copper can turn green inside the connector, and not make connection, spent few hours chasing that one last week. wire only had connectivity if you jammed the DVM lead down in the wire :(
