A customer of mine bought a 418 sbf from a local machine shop that had been machined and assembled. He brought it by for me to check out. After getting it on a engine stand, I put my wrench on it and slowly spun it over. I could feel a bump or two and the rotation was tight. I tore into it and its a good thing I did. The pistons were bumping the counterweight on the crank. The rods were in backwards with the champhered edge facing it other instead of the fillet on the crank. You would have thought the rod being offset in the piston would have raised a flag. It had h bearings in it and as you know the are indexed upper and lower halves. Well the upper bearing was in the cap and the lower bearing was in the rod. Out of curiosity I spun off a top ring and checked it in the bore. There was absolutely no ring gap. This is some bad sh*t. I'll give you each a guess as to what machine shop it came from !

As I'm not familiar with S&R, who might that be? and I guess all I can do about that build is shake my head, and it's a good thing it was brought to be checked over.
I'm pretty sure unless Simmons/Simons. has changed they don't have a clean room to build, and will not do it.

They are located on 17 between Summerville and Moncks Corner.

Sounds like that engine would of ate itself alive the moment it started up.

I'm wondering how much $$ was charged for this assy. Is this a everyday "hi-po" assy/machine shop?. I don't use the assy lube they have on those mains, but I swear it looks like Crisco lol. Maybe I should have my sister drop by and show them a thing or two??
I'd be starting over and double checking everything with this deal. scarry stuff. Or built in money maker??

I didn't know they done assembly until yesterday. It looks as if lithium grease was used as assembly lube. It will be completely torn down and I will start fresh.

Looks like another case of the minimum wage hired help turned loose on people's expensive stuff.
How come there is always money available to do something right the second time around, but never the first?

So I take it the moral of the story is to stay away from theses guys... This is also why I refuse to take my car to shops. Unless its for transmission shit... That's a form of voodoo I have yet to master....

I've told many aspiring hot-rodders that if they want to save money and have it done right, then learn to do the engine wrenching for themselves. There is a reason a good build costs what it does when you have to pay someone to do it.
As for the transmission voodoo, I'm a certified witch doctor in that!

I am all for doing it myself, the guy who originally built my LQ forgot to bolt the pickup tube to my oil pump needless to say the motor ate the main bearings, So I had the crank turned and put it together myself this time. My dad flipped me a lot of shit for letting someone else put my motor together. I had rebuilt 4 before this but since this was the first involving balancing/line bore ect. I let the pro do it. lol never again. Now it seems to be good its seen just over 6800 rpm and held together while JP was tunning it so I guess its good to go.

I just found out that this was the owners engine that was to be installed in a mustang he was building. My customer purchased the motor relatively cheap and really got a good deal. However if you build something like this for yourself and the workmanship is this shoddy, just think about what the customers get. I hate to bash, but this is just stealing !

I wonder if the owner checked the engine out after one of the shop helpers put it together and decided he had better cut his losses and build a new motor?

Or did he build it himself? The help can't do a good job if the owner / teacher / etc. doesn't know what he's doing.

Wow, that is some shit! I thought zero ring gap was good cause it holds in more compression, but it makes it harder to put on the piston..:hysterical:

Gapless:cheers Holds all that spray better too:bigthumb: Them special "self clearancing" rings. and rods, and self rotating/alinging bearings. and who knows what else.
I just can't get over the fact of, that being the stuff you can see.. imagine the stuff you can't see (really small numbers, and special tooling required)..

It's all your fault. Everytime you go to a machine shop they seem to go down hill. :joke:

Andy that's the shop that built Jim's stroker. The one we went back in and it had the push rods to long and the rusty damaged lifters.
