View Full Version : Headed to the big apple
On the train now heading to NYC for my first time ever... Pretty excited actually since I've never been to a big city like this, or on a train for that matter...

Five things to complete a trip to the big apple.
1) See a Broadway show
2) See the statue of liberty
3) Take the subway (kinda required for 1&2 unless you love to walk or sit in traffic)
4) Get mugged (pretty likely when doing 3)
5) Buy some "real" (see:fake) designer stuff from a shady guy on the the street corner. (Can be used to make the mugger think they got off with some good shit)
These will ensure you have a good taste of New York tourism!

I was going to mention food but the first couple times I went up there I ended up eating from chain places because the waits at some of the better local places were in too long. And I am pretty impatient.

third and long is super cheap for beers in manhattan.
i'll upload some pics to photobucket when i get home and get my ipod charged but NYC was absolutely one of the most amazing places i've ever been... here's a quick and dirty rundown (ok, maybe not so much...) of what i did this weekend
we stayed at 5th ave and 25th street...left there and walked to Rockafeller Center (on 50th) and went up to the top... why go to the Empire State building when you can go to Top of the Rock and SEE it
left the Rock and walked down 7th ave to the WTC site in lower Manhattan... that was a LONG walk but really gave me a chance to enjoy the city and see a lot of things
once i got to the site, i found out that tickets are required and you cant really see anything without them
walked over to Battery Park and saw the Vietnam and Korea memorials there as well as saw the Statue of Liberty from across the harbor but it was too late to catch the ferry to go see it by then so I walked around some more until i figured out how to take the subway back uptown
went by the hotel and took a shower then walked back to Times Square, did some shopping, tried to eat at Hard Rock Cafe but couldnt get in due to the line so I settled for Dave and Busters next door where some of my friends already had a table
after supper i set out across town (in a cab this time!!!) to meet up with some other friends at an irish pub... several shots of jamison's and car bombs later, two of them left to go "clubbing" and myself and the other 2 guys went to a strip club... super hot women, free admission (military), free drinks, and free dances... enough said- it was a blast
woke up this morning and grabbed breakfast- Panera since we needed to eat quick so my friends could catch their train
hopped on the subway back down to lower Manhattan and back to the WTC site where i gazed up at the surrounding buildings and took a few moments to reflect on the gravity of where i was and what had happened there... the sky was gorgeous and the weather was perfect... found the little temporary "museum" they have set up there and looked at some of the artifacts, etc from the site as well as pictures of survivors, personal belongings found in the rubble, etc... it was a very humbling experience and i'm extremely happy i took the time to do it even if i didnt get to see the actual site from within the fences
left there and went back to Battery Park to catch the ferry over to the Statue of Liberty, stared at it and walked around for a while, felt super patriotic and then got back onto the ferry to go to Ellis Island
Ellis Island was really neat to see, lots of artifacts and history there and the receiving room is HUGE
hopped back on the subway back up to Penn Station and then got on my train back to Albany where i am now...
lots of walking, not as much money as i thought, and a TON of good memories from this weekend... go if you ever have the chance

Can't carry there, so you won't see me in that communist city. Bloomberg has all the armed protection he wants, but YOU can't have any.

is it really necessary for you to bring your closed minded, political bs into my thread? pretty sure everyone here knows your stance...

Just wow.......Two short sentences stating a fact about NYC and I'm a sumbitch intruding on "your" thread? Continue on with "your" thread, your "highness". :hysterical:

Well said Sir!!!
yes.
You couldve made your point about not wanting to go there by just stating that you cant carry there and been done with it. You felt the need to call it a "communist" city and then take a jab at Bloomberg. Whatever makes your hang-down wiggle man. I enjoyed myself on a trip to a world class city that millions of people from all over the world spend tons of money to visit- something you will likely never get a chance to do because you can't bring your "security blanket" along and suck your thumb while you are there.
And, before you even go there... I'm all in favor of guns and people having them. I grew up in the country and own guns myself. I'm all about self defense and personal protection, 100%. The honest truth that I'm sure you will dismiss in some way though is, I honestly felt safer in NYC than I ever felt in North Charleston, Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham, etc...

Like I'm really going to miss spending my money in a place that flat out denies a person's right to self defense. There's plenty of other freedom loving places in this country to spend my hard earned money in that I would find just as interesting as you find NYC. To each their own. It's what makes us individuals. We can agree to disagree.
What I do find puzzling is the sarcastic tone that you kicked off your replies to my post with. You act as if I attacked you personally for wanting to visit NYC. That couldn't be any farther from the truth. Those that know me know that I am not one to instigate trouble with anyone. Hell, I'm happy that you're happy with your visit. I just stated a fact about NYC and all of a sudden your thong got all knotted up in your ass crack and you went on the defensive.
I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, but such a visit wouldn't be for me. I'm just not the kind of person who will trust anyone else to provide for my own safety. No one else is going to look out for number one but number one. I may have chosen to live a simple life with no big city exposure, but living this way has gotten me this far in life, so I see no reason to change. I will not willingly sacrifice liberty in exchange for perceived safety.

+1
I never intended for any of my replies to be sarcastic, nor was I aware they came across that way. I only called you out because you ARE closed minded, and happy with it (and thats ok)... It's your delivery and placement of your opinions that, honestly, kinda pissed me off. Did I take it as a personal attack? No. And I still don't. You're right, we all are individuals and make our own choices. I would just prefer not to hear about- hence why I don't ever click on the political section on here. I have an aunt who post all sorts of political BS on facebook who I had to essentially block. I still love her to death, but I don't come on the internet to hear about agendas and people's uber conservative (or liberal) views on the world- I get that in real life.
Long story short- yes we disagree on some things. You are happy living a simple life and have opinions and a way of stating them that got under my skin for a moment. You did post them in "my" thread- so called because I am the person who started (makes sense to call it "mine" to me) and I called you out on it. I'm honestly done with it at this point.

you should definitely go... ive been in NY since ocrober of last year and wish now that i hadnt waited so long to go... i did a LOT in my 2 days there, but i think you'd really need 4-5 to do everything...
also, just an fyi- if you want to see the WTC site, you need to buy passes in advance... something i didnt know and i didnt get to go inside the fence to see it

Definitely some good food up there, but it's not somewhere I want to go again. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I went and I think everyone should see it at least once.
Boston, on the other hand, is much nicer.

i think i am a "small town" person
grew up in boondocks. just kinda small town simple. always was a big fear to go into a big city.
well, my daughter moved up by Ballston Spa, and we drove up there, long ago,
when we had the 2004 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel, and it was a big old 4x4.
just stock, those trucks are HUGE.
so we are meandering back home, and wife wanted to go thru NYC for some reason.
the only map we had was like a promo flyer, but you could make out roads, and were WTC was. heck, we jumped off the highway, figured out a few main roads, and vectored right over to the WTC.
i was real proud of myself for finding it...and the wife says "STOP...i wanna see it...."
oh no.. not me, i got the "Gerald"....I ain't getting mugged/beat up/accosted.
so we circle the block, and NOWHERE to park this beast.
finally, i see a bus stop at the WTC area,
and I just pull & park behind it.
some local starts mouthing off "you can't park that THING there"
he was pretty short.
i asked him "what you gonna do about it"
wife got misty eyed looking at the crater.

I grew up on a farm in the country so I'm definitely not a fan of big cities, but I did enjoy Boston. Had a beer at "Cheers"...Faneuil Hall and the area around it is cool to see. I'm a history buff so there was a lot of interesting places to see.
