View Full Version : Anybody have "vegetable gardens" here?

We have started our small vegetable garden again this year and was wondering if any one else does the same. Curious on what you grow (legally) as I might be doing some more vegetables to my garden. Maybe do a "barter" deal.

Cucumbers, carrots and tomatoes here.

I prefer home grown or local produce from farmers market. Trying to eat healthier and all lately to get my race weight down lol

I built a raised bed vegetable garden about a month or so ago. Right now we have tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, eggplant, basil, pimiento, jalapenos, rosemary, parsley, cilantro, some pepper plants, and probably a couple other things I'm forgetting. I'm looking forward to being able to eat some stuff lol. I'd be happy to trade or barter with other people on here.

I'll post a pic in a minute.

tell me more on your raised bed please sir. Has me interested. Right now my stuff is in buckets/pots until they start sprouting a decent amount and then I will transfer to ground.

I have thought about doing herbs also. Especially since the summerville farmers market has a guy that sells them already for planting. Are you growing yours from seeds?

My girlfriend does the raised bed planting at her house. I cant remember what all she has, maybe potatoes, squash, onions, zucchini, lettuce, peas, broccoli, asparagus, assorted peppers, garlic, blueberries, strawberries, basil, oregano, chives, rosemary, lavender.

Here's a pic, forgot to add that we have mint, cucumber, green onions, and lavender and blueberries in the front yard as well. Some stuff we started from seeds, the pepper and tomato plants I got as seedlings from a friend. Some of the other stuff we got from Lowe's since we started kind of late in the season. I saw a design in a magazine and I basically just winged it from there, got the lumber at Lowe's, did the stain and then cut and nailed it all together, pretty easy once you know what you want to do.

I think I will be making the raised bed this weekend. As I talked to some others and that seems to be preferred with the crappy soil we have here.

Yea we did a mix of top soil and fertilizer from Lowe's, less than $1.50 a bag.

Tomatoes, Squash, Zuchinni, Cucumbers, radish, okra, onions, lettuce, peppers-bell and hot as hell, brocilli. That's about it in the garden at the house. At my parents house we have a garden with 17 rows that are 140ft long. There I have Tomatoes, squash, zuchinni, string beans, peas, potatoes, cabbage ,okra ,cucumbers, watermelons, radishes. At the 3rd garden at the church garden I got 7 rows planted of watermelons, okra ,radishes, cucumbers, honeydew melons, cantalope, onions, cabage. I am going to be busy this summer gathering and keeping up with gardens.

Funny this came up because I was in the process of building one for my wife's birthday. This one will be just for tomato's since the area gets a lot of sun. She wants 2 or 3 more built this same size in the back yard. She's really big into canning, last weekend we picked 12 baskets of strawberries and made 60 jars of homemade jam!

Trust me I know, it's all that damn clay. Unless your neighborhood has been sitting for about 15 years generally you don't have much top soil. It is a PITA trying to dig postholes through clay.

I still have to make my small little herb garden next. Those "should" be completed this weekend. I currently have the above garden covered. We watered it lightly and keep it covered. There is a nice amount of heat forming in this soil. I am ready to transplant here very soon to this bed.

I started home growing about a year ago and I would definitely agree with you that since I know where my vegetable plants come from and since I grow everything myself I feel somehow better because it feels like a very healthy alternative to supermarket vegetables where one never knows where they come from or how they have been modified with certain chemicals just to last longer. I am always happy when I see my flowering plants (http://www.serenataplants.com) and know that I am doing something right because I serve my children healthy food and it helps them with their growth. I think this is very important.

I have another bed that I am waiting for it to get to "temp" before I transplant into it. Should be ready tomorrow or Wednesday (I hope).

Bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes (varying sizes),onions, Cilantro, peppermint, basil, parsley and oregano in this bed. I just planted some marigolds as this supposedly helps with cucumber growth. i have no clue. I just know that the Rabbits will have a meal tonight lol

What does the experts think so far? Every Monday I am fertilizing it with MiracleGro Fruit and vegetable liquid fertilizer.

Looks pretty good so far. What are those sad looking plants in the bottom left? Onions? Looks like you must have planted them recently. Also be careful of using too much fertilizer. How often are you watering everything?

Here's ours, just trimmed one of the lettuce plants for our salad with dinner. Looking forward to making some salsa with the Jalapenos and Cilantro soon.

I recently transplanted the onions yesterday. I grow my stuff in pots at first than plant into garden. My lettuce finally starting sprouting after a month of being planted from seeds. My garden gets watered daily. Fertilizer says every 7 to 10 days so that is what i do. My cilantro is having a hard time growing in the bed it seems. I may put it back into the pot and just grow it there. Nice peppers. I planted most of mine late, i hope that doesnt hurt the crop.

I have a small garden, just 3 types of tomatoes, 3 types of peppers, and some squash and zucchini. If I can keep the damn rabbits and deer from eating it all I may even get something out of it this year. I don't want to put up a fence, so whatever is left is what I'll get....I guess.

So far the motion-sensor sprinkler seems to be the charm. That and I leave the porch light on and sometimes have a small alarm-clock radio going.....

http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_home.html that is a site to help on canning different produce and making various items with said produce.

soils the same? fertilizing the same?

My gardens typically get a MINIMUM of 6 hours a day. One gets about 10 hours a day easily. I have been trying to raise my nitrogen level up in my garden as this is what is slowing my growth down. It is doing well just not great. Considering that some of my items were so small that they should have been seedlings lol.

Today I noticed that I had an egg cluster under one cucumber leaf. I removed it and burned it. I also noticed under one other leaf I have a green inch worm. I did the same thing to that leaf as well. I did not notice any more under any other leafs. I have used insecticidal soap on the leafs. I had seven dust also on them. But of course with all the rain it washed it off.

After doing some research these are the culprits of moths. UGH. At least no other plant was effects. Working on ways to prevent this in the future. Just a FYI, to go and check your crops

If you do it, make sure you get an Ortho Dial-n-spray and some RoundUp concentrate to kill all your old grass and weeds. I didn't and now I'm fighting some weed grass coming up in the lawn :(

You pick a cucumber any time you want as long as it has taken shape and color is uniform. The longer you wait it may become bitter.

I didn't grow these. We got them from my brother-in-law. They grow 190 acres of tomatoes. My wife loves to jar tomatoes as it saves us so much money during the course of the year. Think about that it saves $2 to $3 dollars per jar.

Mower I picked up on CL for $140. I have a pretty new snapper, but I wanted something easier to mow around my curved beds. I was a little disappointed about it having a Tecumseh motor, but this thing runs great! Especially for a 13yo mower.

What are you guys using for cover crops? We planted fava beans, clover, feild peas, oats, winter rye, and garlic, yellow onions, spinach, "corn salad", early peas.

Just need some stuff for the winter to help get some nitrogen into the soil.

spent $90 on repairs at Driggers, they put on a new carb, cranked while there, got home, wont' crank, called him back he said:

I would use a circular saw on all 4 sides, and then use a sawzall to finish it off.

choke & throttle stop the saw, pull until it starts or "almost" tries to start. once it does that, turn the choke off and pull it again. if you leave the choke on and keep pulling, it floods the saw. if you have been doing this correctly, disregard... just trying to help and i know a LOT of people just arent doing it right.

figure mine will be 8x4, about 6~10 inches deep?

figured one for yard, and use other one over course of summer, but how much should i put in when I build it?
