A friend of mine at work is looking for a body shop that will give him an estimate that will total his wife's car. She ran under an 18-wheeler. They are upside down on what they owe on it before the accident. He said they have Liberty Mutual insurance. The car should book out at $9,000 and then he said it has to be at $7,000 - $7,500 to total.

I'm not positive, but I'm pretty confident that liberty mutual writes all their own estimates.

He has the gap coverage hence why he wants it totaled. He said something about what damage could be seen came to $4700. They are still tearing into it more to see how much more damage there is. He said the radiator was pushed in and broken. From what he was saying there would need to be another $2,500 worth of damage. Radiator and supports along with some small things probably isn't going to be enough.

On a side note, if they won't total it, anyone have a shop that they would like to recommend?

What he could do is just get it fixed. Then a few weeks later keep complaining about shit. Either they will get tired of paying for a shop (or his premiums go up) and they end up totaling it. Or they keep fixing it. Whats wrong with a repaired car?

USAA has a lifetime warranty on all work done. My moms car was worked on 5 times after the original body work on a front end collision.

Kind of weird. the upside down amount will come due when it is totaled.

LOL. As for the forum being public there is almost no info that links him to this thread. I wouldn't call it fraud. Fraud would be saying the whole car needs to be painted for a broken headlight. This is real damage. He is just hoping that after all of the hard parts are totaled up, paint, and labor it comes out over the limit for totalling the car. Any two shops can have wide differences in labor cost especially when it comes to cars. However it sounds like this is gonna be academic if the insurance company doesn't allow you to bring in an estimate.

Almost seems like someone wants a new car to begin with without having the upside down rolled into the next bunch of car payments.

Call the ins co and ask them if they are gonna appraise the damage or to bring in estimates. Alot of shops won't waste the time to write one if the ins is gonna do their own. If he's the "claiment" there is room for negotiations, if he's the "insured" he basically will get what they wanna give him.
