I'm in the checkout on Amazon right now, about to pull the trigger on an 8,000 BTU window unit for the living room until we can afford a whole new unit.

True, but I have an Amazon card so I get it for cheap and free 2 day shipping. Crashing at the rents until it gets here.

Saw that coming lol

It is small but all I need is for it to help boost the central unit. Now don't go telling everybody you have a bigger unit than me Tyler.

One thing I have finally convinced my wife of is closing the blinds. Has helped my house stay much cooler. She wants the blinds all open all the time and the a/c couldnt keep up. 80-81 degrees all the time. Now I can cool it go 73-74 no problem so if your blinds are open close them.

+1 on this. My wife always likes to keep the front and rear door open with just the outer storm door for a barrier. Blinds open, too. I can certainly feel the heat coming in this time of year at these locations. She is on vacation out of town this week and I have kept the doors closed along with the blinds. My central A/C has no problem at all catching up or keeping up despite the 100 degree outside heat.

Been keeping all the blinds closed except for one that's up about 5" in one window for the cats to look out of. Nice cool 72 in here, so glad they fixed it Saturday morning.
As for a beer, I think I'll be having a few as well this evening.

Pretty much. They try to climb through the blinds if they're closed, which ends up being a bunch of noise, and bent blinds as a result. They make sure we know they're pissed they cant see the outside world.

I wish my foreman and his old lady liked it your way. I am sick and f'ing tired of freezing every night in the company apartment. They both have really high blood pressure and are always hot. Every night I wake up and the thermostat is on 60.....it's my teeth chattering and me shaking that wakes me up. Not only does my job suck all day, but every night i stay in an icebox.

Portables are much less efficient. 12K BTU will work like a 5K. I would rather cut a hole in the wall and install a good sleeved unit. Plus you usually get more AC for the money with a sleeved unit vs a portable.

One of the plus sides to living in an apartment..power bill hasn't been over $105 since we moved in a year ago...unit under us is a unrented model and they keep it cool..only 2 exterior walls are exposed to elements...upstairs renters are fat And I assume they keep it cool

Absolutely. I've done it several times in homes I have built and the power bill is usually about half. The upfront cost is pretty substantial though, so it's a long term investment.

This is the first year Ive had to bump up the average temp in my house. I usually like it at 72ish at night and 74 during the day. Now its 74 at night and 76 in the day. We keep all the blinds closed and curtains drawn closed. I did tint my front bedroom and the window next to the front door. 1 way 20% tint. Helped tons in the front room.

Residential Window manufacturers will decline warranties for damage from window tint.
How long have you guys had the tint on your windows? I'm wondering what the long term consequences are, if there is any?

For those of you who are getting your houses to cool down to 75 or below in this 100+ heat, consider yourselves lucky. HVAC sizing criteria for residential dwellings is typically 75 indoor drybulb temp @ 95 outdoor drybulb temp. This does not take into account the wetbulb temps we experience here in the south. I believe the wetbulb temp calculation is usually around 67 according to the manual J.
An oversized ac system will not run long enough to properly dehumidify the space when the ambient temps drop below the mean temp. Be careful with this when replacing your system as you can open the door for moisture problems in your home and other air quality issues.

My 1900 sq ft house will stay cool enough for the a/c to kick off during the day. I kick the a/c off before going to work and it is around 80 degrees when I make it back home. My gas and power bill is just over $100 bucks a month.
