I have a HTC thunderbolt (android) that I love, though needs the battery replaced. If you're not gonna do all that much with it, the iphone is probably fine.

If your more of an advanced user, get the android its a more powerful platform.

i've had nothing but android phones for the past few years, my best friend has an Iphone.
mine freezes, crashes, gets thrown down, cussed at, and i hate it.... i have to shut it down for a few minutes everyday randomly just to get internet to work again. (this goes for all the android phones i've had except the original mytouch i had, probably 10 or so android phones now.
his iphone never freezes, never crashes, he can watch youtube videos in my house, i cant even make a phone call in my house.
oh i need to switch to verizon.

If you want a slide out keyboard, Droid 4. If you are fine with only having a touch screen, Galaxy Nexus or S III.
I would stay away from apple products, they are too proprietary and many of their products are overpriced. It's a fashion phone.

Service has alot to do with it, but unlike IPhones, most android phones you get from a service provider like sprint or the rest come with bloatware loaded with shitty code. You really have to know wtf you are doing with an android. Its like windows, it holds the largest marketshare when it comes to smartphone and tablets therefore it is attacked the hardest with bloatware.

I have Verizon and use a thunderbolt. Mine is awesome. Rarely ever reboot it and rarely ever have problems. I have heard of one girl I work with had the exact same phone and she complained about it, but I think it was all of the weird apps she was trying to run. My only problem is battery life in 4g but I toggle it over to 3g and get one or two days in between charges. On 4g you will get around four hours BTW. My sister and a bunch of relatives have the iphones. They complain sometimes but not that much I would say. I just haven't seen any reason to switch happy with my current and not interested in switching.

One of the things I like with mine I am sure can be done with any of the droid phones I can switch back and forth, so I leave it on 3g unless I am going to load some videos. I can load HD videos without buffering 99% of the time. I can also toggle over to 4g and load the same video inside buildings that some of the other guys can barely get service in twice as fast as it will play.

When I deal with an Apple product, I always wonder why other companies have such a problem getting it "right". Of course, that's just my opinion. to me thats like calling corvette owners gay because you can make a mustang faster....
i have NO clue how to mod my phone, and have better things to do than learn how (no offense) so why not go Iphone which needs no modding (much like buying a new corvette over a new 5.0
i'm just saying for the person that doesnt know how to hack/mod/fuckup an android phone doesnt the iphone make more sense, especially when iphones are pretty problem free out the box and androids are "buggy".
just my experience and point of view, not attacking corvette owners, mustang owners, apple fans, android fans or phone hacks.

Theres a diference, its better out of the box without any hacks, you just have to remove th bloatware and sometimes it gets tricky to do.
And because you can find so many thing that you have to pay for on apple but yet free for android, sme people get download happy and screw themselves.
Trust me theres no comparison like corvette and 5.0. androids have bigger screens twice the processing and video capability, twice the bandwith, twice the storge, twice the processors of any I phone out there.

So what you are saying is that you have to mod your droid to make it as good, reliable, whatever you want to call it, as an apple out of the box. But once modified, it is much better?

i agree with some of that, but lets talk the average user. probably harder for someone like you to understand than me because i get a phone and i use it, thats about it. i do download some apps (i might have 5-10) but i mainly use it for the web/text/dial, basic data use i guess. i just feel like for alot of the average users the iphone will fit better. dont get me wrong i love androids operating system MUCH better than windows mobile, and if i had an iphone my opinion of it might be different, but Tmobile doesnt offer iphones:?
my screen is cracked now and Tmobile just stopped doing the "free upgrades" so i will likely go to verizon and use an iphone.

As soon as you remove the a/c its a race car.

I dont tether, I hit a button, assign a password to the connection so not everyone can get it (because trust me I had a car follow me for 100 miles using my connection) and tell my kids to find the wifi.

How do you know what I experienced? I used it enough to know that I typed a whole page of text in word that went "poof" and completely disappeared. I have spent a hell of a lot more time staring at that mint spinning around, than I have the hourglass on a pc. We had 4 desktops and 2 macbooks, every one of them had catastrophic failure within 2 years (motherboard, I think). We also had constant network connection issues with the "airport".
If you want to compare a mac to a cheap dell, hp, compaq, emachines, etc, then yes, macs are a little better. But for less money than a mac, you can have a custom pc built that will be faster and more reliable.

We can argue all day long about what it's good for, but as for reliable, Mac wins that hands down all day every day. I've had pretty much every Mac that's been out since the Apple II and never had a problem with any of them.
The macbook I have now is going on 5 years old, and I have literally never had a problem with it, not even a tiny one, nothing. I have had 3 pc's in that same time period and every single one of them has gone kaput within months, even though none of them were used for anything more than surfing the internet and word processing.

I'm just saying, that your phone doesn't have that capability..... You know why?
Cause Apple doesn't want you to have it and service providers want you to pay a fee for it.

use PDA net to tether for free off of it, but cant use it as a wifi hotspot for free.
on my ~3rd phone in 2 years (battery, power plug, i broke it)
the voice "function" is AWESOME.
you hit the Voice Search button, and say "Navigate to Walmart, Saratoga springs, NY"
and it opens the GOOGLE navigator, and plots your course.
or say "send text to Zac my car needs washed"
and you get 100 reasons why it's too hot
it will do GOOGLE, text, phonecalls, Navigation, all with one button & voice commands

Bob,
To be on topic;
There are 3 major operating systems out on the market at this time and since I have used all 3 I can comment my findings and maybe assist you with a choice. Price will always be a factor as I am sure you do not want to spend xxx.xx$ for a phone when all you do is text and call.....and slight web surfing.
i-phone (running ios5, which ios6 is coming out like now I think)
The iphone is a great device and can cover all of your needs (calling, basic websurfing, and texting, and even multiple e-mail clients). However, iphones take years to become free on a plan, and are limited on data. And they have some flaws. Namely the screen, its made from first gen gorilla glass (Corning Glassware just released a new version that should be on the new iphone coming out). In which if dropped, pretty much from 2.5-3 feet will spider crack the whole screen (no dents, just spider the whole screen. The operating system (ios5) is quite nice, siri can be fun to play with but really not helpful (she gets an upgrade with ios6). Its a slick, easy to use device and app's can be had for free that will allow you to do many things (there are many apps that would assist you with even giving a customer at your hand the est price of labor and cost of parts).
Windows Phone 7.5 Mango:
I currently own an HTC Radar. Its quite nice, smooth, and easy to use. Its running Windows 7.5 Mobile (aka mango). Its front screen is called "metro" and will be used for Windows 8, which will streamline ALL microsofts product line, desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphones. Much like apple, they are moving towards a streamline product base. Metro is a "tile" based icon and you flip through the tiles, they are live and real time so facebook tile will show you updates from friends you have etc.... A wonderful device, easy to use. And whats best is much like Apple, Microsoft is now "getting it" make the software match with the hardware specs. My phone is a single core processor with 256mb of memory and runs great. The phone I would recomend on this platform would be the Nokia Lumia 900, and the reason why is its polar opposite to the iphone:
<iframe width="853" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Jf1fRu9YgfE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Android operating system using Ice Cream Sandwhich
This is always a great alternative to the previous 2 mentioned software platforms because there are a shitton of phones running various flavors of Android based operating systems. There are over 200-300 phone makes/models that run on this platform. They are all quite nice for what they are used for. I won't go into to much detail due to so many. But if you were to buy a phone with this and money is no object; HTC One X, or Samsung GS3.
With all that said, all of these phones will do what you need. No one phone is easier, no operating system is better. Because you will be doing the same thing, checking e-mail, web surfing, calling, receiving calls, and texting....
I do believe Randy is right, the carrier is pretty much the main thing you should be interested in when it comes to picking the right phone.
My work gave me a blackberry and the middle scroll button broke the next day. RIM is going out of business, they have tripped up too many times. And now that Apple has support for Exchange servers for e-mail clients and I think Android will or does now support Exchange......Blackberry will be a thing of the past here soon.
In closing, good luck. Don't listen to the slander. All 3 platforms are wonderful to work on. All 3 can be customized in any way shape and form. You can get a droid to run a custom ROM of Apples software if you so choose.
Make sure to get the warranty replacement program, you being a mech I would look into Otterbox defender series as a case. And go to: http://www.bestskinsever.com/ to get a full cover skin. These are 1 time investments that will ensure your phone is pristine and will not break easily. And you can always sell it when your renewal is up and with these protective screens and cases it will be a 9/10 flawless to get more money for them.
Hope this was semi helpful!
Any more questions I can answer.
Also, Forcefed, stop being a macfag ^__^

Battery life should not be affected in this regard. I maybe mistaken. But no phone has dual antenna's.....so it will still try to attach to a 4g carrier. And keep looking. That is to say its a 4g phone. Out in Orangeburg I have 2g and just g. Pretty sad~
Now, if you want to save battery.....cut off the wi-fi unless you intend on using it. Roaming for that can kill it deed.

Battery life is also affected by gps tracking, screen usage time, screen brightness among other things. Cut down on any or all of these and any phone battery life will increase.
The most common complaint I read about any smart phone is battery life. I remember when my old "dumb" flip phones would last for days because it only got used while placing a call. :hysterical:

Get a laptop, and try and use it for 10 hours...... What? not hapening? oh thats common sense.....
Try to use a phone to do the same thing as you would with a laptop that would be dead in 4 hours and then complain it doesn't last more than 10-12........

I can build a PC that runs Windows 7 that will last longer, and preform better than any mac product and still remain with in budget of the Mac product in question.
Does not mean I am better, or more right.
Apple consumers: They want something to work out of the box with little to no customizlability. They pay a high premium for this.
Windows based PC's: Poor people. And people who want to customize the shit out of their custom made pc to do whatever they want because its their property. And no one will tell them any different.
I could never own an apple laptop/desktop/tablet.....for the life of me I could not see spending that much money on something I do not need.

Goes back to customizing it for your needs. Took me a lot of tinkering to get that 10.5 hr's. Reinstalling a custom version of Windows XP.

They go by both abbreviations but yes. SSHD=solid state hard drive. SSD=solid state drive. Same thing. Some of my computer failures in the past were caused by broken HDD's. SSD have to be more reliable and faster with no moving parts but damn the current prices. Gotta love new tech prices.

They are actually quite lower than when they first came out. If you want a deal on one tell me how many GB you're looking for and I can let you know a price. SSD is the quick way that most techie's use.....so I am used to that.
Also, the tech behind a SSD is still very premature. A normal spinning HDD will last longer than an SSD. Depending on the brand you may have had some crummy HDD's. I stick to Seagate and Western Digital. Good power supply can cause a HDD to last longer.....and not filling up a HDD helps too.
SSD's have an X amount of write time. As in, if you write 7,000 things over one area, that part will fade and no longer produce a writable area. Yes 7k writes seems like a lot. But a normal spinning HDD will last well over a million writes IIRC (I maybe slightly wrong but you get the point).
SSD will mature when they start producing organic flash memory......then....you will see a huge improvement. Also SSD's are limited in their speed with the operating system you install.

Tether means you have internet for one device. Sometimes it even means using the data cord. I have not used tethering
on an iphone, so unsure if it has to be hardwired or not. But still can only be used on one device.

I believe one of my iPads is 4G (Verizon LTE?) and it's not that impressive to me. Maybe it's because my iPhone and iPad does what it's suppose to do when I push the button anyway. No crazy loading times, etc.

I cant stand jailbroken phones. I did it a few years ago to one of my old Iphones and I felt it made it very sluggish. Doubt Ill ever do it again. I can see where 4g would be beneficial if you use alot of bandwidth like in randys case during travel with his kids or what not. With my current wireless needs its not necessary for me.
Last time I did it you did need to mod your phone to tether (not jailbreak) but you couldnt use it as a broadcast station AFAIK but I dont need that feature and havent looked into it. Neither of those features are built into my ATT iphone 4.
I do however still have true unlimited data on ATT. Word is verizon is phasing out current unlimited data customers to a tiered data plan. Is that true?

That's illegal. With Randy and his Droid its acceptable. And my Windows7.5 phone, its built in and no charge is applied.
As you can see from the first and only post on that link, ATT could find out and charge you up the ass for that. Knowing ATT they will find out and back charge anyone caught with this device.

If you were grandfathered in, you keep the unlimited data.
But they try to take advantage of you when you renew your contract to make you believe you lost unlimited data. Or they ask you to change your plan (any change in plans causes them to get rid of your unlimited data).
I was a data hog when I was at Comcast (maps, maps, maps....and websites to pass the time waiting on idiot customers). I never went over 2.43gb of data. That was up and down x-fer. So their 4gb max plan isn't bad. Just stupid as hell it is the same price as the unlimited plan (29.99/month).

I havent researched it thoroughly but thats kinda what I gathered too. Its not mandatory but they try to pressure you into it. Also if you buy a new phone at a reduced price with a contract you no longer get unlimited data. Forcing you to buy a retail priced phone to keep it.

Most likely not. Apple isn't notorious for having large storage for the most part. Space and heat become issues when you add more flash memory.
Plus more work for the processor to process the storage.

i use pc's but i also have ipods and an iphone 4... i like the iphone, personally, since it is easy to navigate and i dont have to fuck with it... i put my music on there, plug it into my stereo and jam out driving down the road, talk, text, web, etc... my only complaint is that while my ipods (ipod touch 3 and 4) will store the password to my home network and automatically connect to it, my iphone will not for some reason and if it ever disconnects from my wifi, i have to manually re-enter the password again to get it to connect...
I'm happy with my razr. Just got the ICS upgrade, and my phone is completely stock bloatware and all.
I put a SSHD in my laptop about 2 months ago and it made a world of difference.

Everyday computing is just slightly faster, but it really shines with programs that are reading/writing a bunch of data. Most noticeable computer upgrade I have seen in a while.

Mine does too. I think there is a setting for it.
if someone knows how to fix it, i would love to know... both of my ipods do it, but looking back and forth between the three, i can't find any differences as far as the networking settings... it's annoying to say the least cause my password is long as shit :hysterical:

I would just reset the network settings, then log back into the network and see if it remembers it after that.

The razr picks up 4G automatically when its in area otherwise its 3g. I just did a quick search and found a shortcut app to switch back and forth. Ill give it a shot tomorrow leave it in 3g and see if the battery lasts longer than 2 days.
I just go into the phone's settings and change them so that it won't try to use the 4g. The girl at work was using one of the apps that did it. She also had a bunch of other crap on there. I can't say it specifically that app that did it but I have always done it my way and never had a problem. There are threads all over the droid forums on how to turn off the 4g for each phone. After you do it a few times you will be able to do it by memory. It only takes a minute.

I have an Iphone and AT&T and I will continue to do so till the end of time or until I am no longer grandfathered into AT&T's unlimited data plan whichever comes first.
Joe has hated on my iphone and the fact that i've had a mac computer for over 5 years with no problems. Guess as he says..im still just a fan boy.
I guess Joe needs a droid for work purposes....:cheers:finger:

I have had both and would pick the iphone all day every day. as a matter of fact, I like my iphone and ipad so much, and have had zero problems, that I now want to switch all my computers to mac. When I deal with an Apple product, I always wonder why other companies have such a problem getting it "right". Of course, that's just my opinion. I typed this from my windows based PC, which i had to reboot because the hour glass was spinning and the computer was froze! Should have used the iPad!
Couldnt have said it better myself.....I actually had to re-boot my damn pc so I could print something earlier today, lol. My wife, me, and my brothers all have iphones and ipads, only problem was I had a 3gs with a bad battery but they swapped it right out. I thought the ipad was a waste of money until i bought my wife one, they are actually pretty handy to have. I dont think she has even touched a computer since she got the ipad last year.I had HTC phones before iphone and the iphone hands down beats in reliability and ease of use. I have mine jail broke so I can do pretty much anything the android phones can do.

by the looks of it i may just go with the iphone if i change over. i went and looked at some of them today. i dont think it will be worth spending the extra 100 dollars when changing to go with the ipone4s over the 4
I have both, I hardly ever use the extra features on the 4S. I got the 4s just because I got it for cheap and my brother wanted my old iphone.

The app that works best is called phone info. All it does is opens up a menu that normally needs coding put in to access. You can change a lot of settings in it. Including what network the device connects to. The only one needed is "phone info" You want to always choose one with auto PRL in the name when using a SIM equipped phone (any of the VzDubya 4G ones) as the others generally just kill your signal all together.
Something you have to take into consideration when buying the phone is that Android is a platform used on hundreds of devices. It's an "open" free software that you or any OEM can obtain and code to your liking not just cellular communications equipment either. With this in mind you shouldn't hold a negative outlook on all Andorid equipped phones because company "X" sucked at building the software into their hardware. Also many like to "skin" their own UI on top of it that can be litterally horrible but specific to the single company (and even vary from phone to phone within a company).
With the iPhone they have one product line. They control the hardware and software. As such it is not as personal, fun, or techy. However, the shit is going to just work, most the time.

iphones also have good resale, if you pay $200 or so with a contract through verizon, once you upgrade in 1-2 yrs you can still probably get your money back out of them

16GB iPhone 4S's are for sale all over ebay that don't work, because of water damage, and still selling for $400. That's just crazy.

Selling? Or for sale?
Don't see how water damage phone or electronic device of any kind could sell for much of anything.
In China you can buy an iphone 4s for 60 bucks American

And sure they are, you can fix them for CHEAP and sell them for full price. I bought a water damaged one, took it apart, cleaned off corrosion, replaced litmus paper, and resold it. Made $200 in about 2 hours.

I mod mine, so I had ICS for about a year. It was nice on a dual core clocked to around 1600mhz, but Ive switched to the latest jellybean mod now and its a big improvement.
I tell anyone that thinks their phone is badazz run youtube desktop style and watch a video like you would on your PC not the app, not fullscreen, but webpage style, then benchmark it while watching the video, if it doesn't lag, your junk is right, if it lags your junk is slow.

That means mine is badass.
Windows Phone 7.5 and up (8 is coming later this year). Has native desktop web browsing already programed into it. I watch youtube off it all the time. On 4g and wifi.
One thing Microsoft is doing right these days, software.

i have the heavy duty otter box on my 3GS...has a hard case, protective film over screen, and a rubber skin that fits over the whole thing....my dad ran it over one day with their suburban...couple scratches on the corners of the hard case...worked just a good as before

Life case! Yes it's $80 but it's really water proof. And drop proof and has a built in screen protector. Plus it's half the size as an otter box defender

I dont want to spend $200 on a phone but would like a different heap than this BB.....
i like my otterbox... the lifeproof cases are pretty badass as well, i just dont like the feel of them as much... i might switch when i get stationed near an ocean again though since the lifeproof offers better protection for sand/water/etc...

They are a little hard to get used to. Has your otter box stretched out any? I had them on a few phones and the only issue was them stretching in the corners. But I herd they use a different material now.
the one in my ipod touch is a little bit stretched after a year and a half, but it has been taken off and put back on a lot... the otterbox on my iphone is basically brand new so i haven't had time to see yet

android 4.0 > Iphone> android 2.3
The new 4.0 thats on the new phones makes for a better phone then what apple is offering now, especially if you can get 4g coverage. I'd definitely pick an iphone over android 2.3, which is going away at a rapid pace, its the one with all the issues of being slow/freezing ect. It will really come down to prefernce, my entire family has iphones, and i have an old htc evo, and some friends with new droid 4.0's...and the new droids are better imo, but iphones have all the snazzy extras. If you can hold out until october, the new iphone 5 w/ 4g is supposed to be coming out. My contract is up around then and i'll have a hard time deciding what to do

iPhone 4 is as good as a droid.
wife had a iphone 3, and she used my driod all the time.
she went to the AT&T store few years back, phone was $200, but she only wanted to pay $100, so they told her they were cheaper on line, and they were $100 online, but they had "refurbs" for $50.
she used it for two years, went to get an iPhone 4 (she REALLY wanted the speech to text functionality) and it was $100, and they gave her $50 trade in on her iPhone 3.
crazy.
as a general rule, if we are driving, and she is using her phone's keyboard & google, and I pick up my phone and say "NAVIGATE TO WENDY'S IN WALTERBORO"
my phone will be in the navigate mode and spouting directions before she can get hers to do anything useful.
