I hate watching "Wheeler Dealers" on TV.
I have flipped cars my whole life, and never really had a problem with a car breaking down after I sold it.
but, if I take a peice off a car, and it is a "wear item" i generally replace it
on Wheeler Dealers, they took the steering rack off a car. and to do that, he had to break the tie rod ends loose & remove them.
and he put the old tie rod ends back on, with the new rack.
my theory is, if the tie rod ends have transmitted enough jarring, beating, banging and knocking to the rack & pinion to destroy it, you "MIGHT AS WELL" replace them too.
I look at like this: if you are a good mechanic, and you have it apart, you MIGHT AS WELL do it, because to get back to that point of dis-assembly, will either cost you a LOT of time, or the potential buyer a LOT of money.
you MIGHT AS WELL do it right.
I bought a junk car this past week to flip, and the starter or the battery one was bad. I just replaced them both. I did the plugs & wires, shot some freon in it. took me just a few hours, and a bit of cash, but i doubled the value of the car (from slow cranking to instant crank with COLD AC) and i gave the next owner a long service life before it needs work, or runs lethargically again.
IDK, but if i put my name on something, esp like Wheeler Dealers does on TV, I would replace more of the wear items. they just do the minimum to get by, seems to me.
