On Monday, July 30, U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) introduced legislation that would impose sweeping new--and not so new--restrictions on ammunition sales.

The bills, S. 3458 and H.R. 6241, are known as the ÔÇ£Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act.ÔÇØ The bill itself has four elements:

A federal licensing requirement for ammunition sellers;
Recordkeeping on all ammunition sales;
Reporting of all sales of more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition to anyone without a federal firearms license within five consecutive business days; and
A photo identification requirement for all non-licensees buying ammunition, ÔÇ£effectively banning the online or mail order purchase of ammo by regular civilians.ÔÇØ

My opinion is that this reporting of all sales of more than 1,000 rounds without the ffl within 5 days is absurd. What could can come from that. I will just say that if you buy 2, 550 rounds boxes of .22lr ($40 total from walmart) you would be reported. I believe this database could be used as a way for the government to start a "domestic terrorist" watch list and eventually by used to target those individuals who constantly purchase ammo as they will be threatened thinking that this individuals are PREPARED for anything from the zombie apocalypse to government take over.

The logical question many people would ask is "Why do such an ill advised thing as propose this kind of ban?" In their own words they tell you in the thread I posted in the Politics section.

Some times what they propose sounds "reasonable" or "common sense" to many and well meaning people say "Why not?" or "What could it hurt?".

It's part of an overall strategy that leads to one goal, nothing less than an end to all civilian firearms ownership.

They have to keep the so called "threat" of domestic terrorism alive in order to justify the existence of all those alphabet agencies created to deal with it in the first place. Makes you wonder what came first, the chicken or the egg?

Yeah, while they were talking about domestic terrorist people were thinking Arab infiltrators and such. It's just a means for more control. I'm betting though if the "government" tried to get heavy handed with civilians they'd have a big problem with many in the military and civilian law enforcement.

Plus if they think these poorly trained mooks like DHS etc. could roll over a bunch of country boys with deer rifles they might be surprised.

Make no mistake, though, that there will be no shortage of like minded control freaks in various positions of "authority" that are only out to preserve their own government given jobs first - the people be damned. There may be a few true patriots among their ranks that will side with the Constitution and quit before they knowingly violate the people's rights, but my guess is it wont be enough.

Normally I'd say "We'll see" but in this case I hope we never do. If anyone does end up doing the right thing in the face of orders it will be the front line people not the command people.

they're trying to boil the frog. they want to place restrictions a little at a time until guns and ammo are completely outlawed. one day we will all wake up and wonder what happened to the 2nd amendment.

It's so obvious that none of these people have ever owned or even shot a gun. They act like 1,000 rounds of ammunition is a lot. This pisses me off to no end but it won't pass through Congress. The NRA and the general populace won't let it happen.

Read the first section of quotes, everyone who believes in Gun Rights and the 2nd Amendment should know what certain people have said. It's not a guess or opinion as to what their intentions are, it's from their own mouths;

I just wrote letters to both Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham from their websites. It's easy to do and I suggest that everyone reading this do the same. It doesn't have to be long or eloquent, just pass on your thoughts and what you want. They need to know we are watching what they do and don't do.

I just got an auto response from Graham saying he does read his mails and will reply personally, we'll see. It also lists phone numbers for his office so I think I will give them a call tomorrow.
