We have tossed around of getting my wife a gun in the future and I figured since there are some knowledgeable folks on here I would ask your opinions. The gun would be used for personal protection and more than likely carried in her purse, but I would assume at some point she'd carry it on her person from time-to-time. Obviously we'd be looking for a weapon that has some decent stopping power but she's a small girl (5'1" & 90lbs) and she's not looking for a hand cannon. A couple of recommendations that we've had were a snub nose .38 special and a Bersa .380. I would like to get 4 or 5 guns that you guys think would be good fits and go to the range and let her pick out the best one for her. The only stipulation she has is the gun MUST have a safety but other than that she's willing to look and shoot several different models until she finds one she's 100% comfortable with. Thanks in advance for any input that y'all be able to provide!

-Mike

Smith & wesson bodyguard. That is my wifes next gun. She currently has the taurus tcp 738. Nice small gun. But it lacks and thumb safety (has a safey but not for quick use)

.380 with home defense rounds (basically ballistic tips for a handgun) not many small guns have a safety for a concealed weapon. the safety is your trigger...if you need it, its ready to fire. If need be, you dont want to worry about a safety, MOST guns are drop tested to not be fired when dropped, kicked, slung, etc. I took my fiance to the range and let her test fire every gun they had, and she ended up with a pink .380 for her car and a pink .380 for her nightstand. They were on sale for 219 a piece.

quick use is the key IMO

Where was this at and who was the manufacturer? Her reasoning for the safety is due to the kids. We have a 4 & 8 year old.

My wife carries a Sig P238 .380. She never liked guns until I bought that one for her, only 4th pistol I bought for her, lol. Now she has probably 1500 rounds through it and shoots all the time. Bottom line if she doesnt like to shoot whatever you buy her then she will never be proficient with it. Take her to the range and rent every .380 and see what she likes vs trying to find a cheap pistol.

+1 on this. I have seen many a traded in pocket pistol not long after the owner only shot a box or two of ammo though one. Most of them are not a pleasant experience to shoot due to their ultra light weight. Their small size doesn't help much with ergonomics, either. But, having something on your person is better than calling 911 (hopeless).

The main thing is to spend a few hours at the range and rent various ones to see what works in her hands and with her build.

My wife carries and loves our Bersa Thunder. 380. Its been a great gun. Only problem was it would jam on some crappy blazer rounds. But no other problems with over 1000 rounds through it.

I bought my wife a Springfield Armory XD9 sub-coompact. I like the XD series as much if not more than my Glock.

My wife is rather skiddish about guns so we are working on that. Till she gets more comfy for a bigger gun I bought her this Walther P22. You can borrow it and test it out if you wish. -Shane

I sold my Glock after getting my S&W M&P. They are similiar in build but night and day in feel.

Mike, lets go to the range one day and she can shoot my wifes. 380 and my 9mm. Honestly my 9 has a lot less recoil than her. 380. Wife loves my 9 for that fact

My wife was the same way but I have told here there are bad people in the world and she can be a victim or a hero. That she might be saving my life and if she loved me she would learn how to do it. That got her on the range...she was not happy about it but with proper training and multiple trips it wont be that bad.

Do you not have insurance on her?

I have one of these, the Taurus 651 Protector (https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/reviews/guns/taurus-651-protector-357-magnum-proven-versatile-value/).

Can shoot 38 or 357, no snag hammer and mine has been reliable.

But in the end the choice needs to be something she's comfortable with and something that she'll practice with.
