Looking for a compact 1911, ive been leaning towards a Kimber ultra raptor II. What else is out there that you have had good experience with?

I recently rented a Springfield Armory EMP .40 at ATP. If I had the spare scratch, I would pick one up.

A buddy of mine racked his slide and as soon as he did the gun began firing till it cleared the mag. This was with an Ultra carry two in a .45 caliber. Very lucky he had both hands on it and that it was pointed down range.

Sig P238? Not a 1911 but same style in 380. I don't care for the 380 anymore but a lot of people seem to like carrying the 238.

I carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II quite often and like it. It kills only when i want it to. No problems with the full auto option on mine. You just have to know how to use it. :poke:

Was this a box stock gun or did it have some work done to it?
I also forgot to mention i was looking for something in .45. I like the P238 and 938 but neither come in 45.

Smith & Wesson makes a compact officer's size 1911 with their scandium alloy aluminum frame. I've seen them on Gunbroker for $950 and up in the past before this recent buying panic.
S&W also makes a commander size 1911 with a bobtailed grip utilizing the scandium alloy frame. To me, the bobtail helps conceal the full size grip just as good as the one round less capacity shorter officer's size grip.
As an alternative to a bobtail, Wilson Combat makes what they call a round butt mainspring housing. It doesn't chop off near as much of the rear corner of the grip like a full bobtail, plus this feature is available in an officer length mainspring housing. Ed Brown bobtails are only for full length 1911 grips.
As far as MIM parts are concerned, there are definitely good flavors and bad flavors out there. I have at least 20,000 rounds through my S&W1911 and it is still running the original OE MIM fire control parts. I believe it boils down to the QC of the particular vendor that manufactures the MIM parts for the major gunmakers.

the MIM discussion is rejected here as OBE:
http://www.defensivecarry.com/forum/general-firearm-discussion/125106-what-wilson-combat-thinks-mim-parts-1911s.html
A company that I will not name gave the MIM parts a bad name because they had a bad batch of MIM parts. This was many years ago. Since then remarkable things have happened.
MIM parts are extremely dense and very exact. They are much less prone to wear and breakage than a factory Colt, Spfg. etc. part. This is why we use them in our CQB's, etc. Although not quite as hard as our tool steel parts, they will last a very long time. This is why we can still quarante our total gun, including the MIM parts, for life.

I have two Kimbers through which I've shot tens of thousands of rounds and no part (MIM or not) has ever failed... unless you count springs which have worn out and been replaced. The MIM parts are still holding up.

Why 1911?...many proven polymer guns on the market

Becuase 1911 > Polymer... Plain and simple and has for over 100 years.
OP, I carry and conceal a full size 1911 so any of the smaller 3-4 inche guns will be easy to hide. The correct holster makes all the difference in the world.

I like my polymer but I agree a 1911 is much better. I still don't have one but when I have the cash to drop on a "good" one (maybe not so good by some standards) I will for sure.

I have a Para Ordnance that I will put up against any of them for reliability and accuracy and I got it for less than 600 bucks.

Its just something ive been wanting.
I found a S&W pro series and Sig ultra two tone that ive been researching. I have since read about numerous qc problems with Kimber, it seems either it works great or people continuously have issues. I feel like if i spend 1200 for a gun it shouldnt have these kinds of problems.

I like the classic look of most of the 1911's, but I do like the feel of my M&P so I think I will stuck with it.

Dont know the OP or the poster that posed the 1911 vs Polymer question so I cant comment. OP and others it will make a difference in how your built on what is comfortable to carry. I'm a big guy so the 1911 fits me fine. Sean is a bean pole that may weight 150 soakin wet with boots on.. so the polymer (lighter) is better for him.

Did some more reading on MIM parts and it looks like the majority still use them, sig,s&w,colt, sti and kimber. Basically it looks like "pick your poison" or spend big money. The bigger custom companies svi, ed brown and DW are all forged parts and that shows in the price.

The 1911 platform will surprise most of you on its concealability. It's only 7/8" wide across the slide which enables most folks to carry iwb without going to a bigger waist size for their pants. You can even get thin profile grips to slim the grip down, too.
