I was going to head back to school to finish my degree needing just 64 credits for my BA but Navy retirement pay isn't cutting it. I know this forum is a long shot but I also know that most jobs are gotten through friends. I have a resume and a ten person reference list if needed. Throughout my career I have dealt with ammunition, weapons, quality assurance, tons of electronics and a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt. Long shot, but any help is greatly appreciated.-Shane

Are you not able to get/use a GI Bill?

Are you not able to get/use a GI Bill?
I am able, and the E5 BAH would help with bills but a job will pay more which is what I need. I hoped to be able to go full time but it looks more like a job and part time school atleast for now.

At around 15-17hours all year (including summers) I've still had enough time to have a job as well...
My advice, if I may, would be that if you just want to do school on the side, to not use your GI bill. It only works in "months" and you only get a set amount (36?). They don't care if you take 1 class or 5 classes in a month, it still gets used up. They also pro-rate your pay based on how much time you are signed up for (full time, 70%, etc). So it's much more worth it to go full time (more pay and not wasting the month), though I've been going 15-19 most semesters to try and get it done in 3 years.
Good luck, Shane.

Thanks for the info, things to consider. Yes it is 36 months regardless so the more I take the better. Times are just tuff, as in rite now. We tried to make it till I got my disability but that takes up to a year. I've got to do something for sure, school or a job.

Which do you have? MG or Post-911 ? I'd rather cut back on everything (cable/tv/slow internet, ramen noodles, sell a vehicle) and goto school full time then go half and half. get your mind right, get in the zone and get it done.

Since he mentioned BAH then I'm assuming he's eligible for the post-911 which IMO is the better one. VA pays school directly so you don't have to worry about that, and you get E-5 BAH on top of that.

I switched to the Post-911 just before I retired. I would be fine if I was getting the disability but we know how long that can take and I still have 8 months to hit the year mark I retired. I am rather tired of being home, it's been a great break but more than anything I want to start on m 2nd career. Issue is the jobs I want require that 4 year degree so it's a double edge sword. The right choice is to buckle down and finish it but two years of school with the BAH, my retirement which is little and my wife's paycheck isn't enough. I feel I atleast need to work till I get my disability and will take 2 classes till then. Thanks for the input, and help guys. Midlife crisis is being between two careers, lol.

my buddy just got out with ~26 years as an E8, and he can't find work.
it's TOUGH out there.
IIRC, you have be full time/on campus to get the $1200 BAH for post 9-11,
if you are full time, but off campus/online, you only get $300 BAH.
i have a year left of the $1200 BAH option, but I cant find anything decent/interesting to take on campus

BAH of course fluctuates based on location, but damn, $1200 seems pretty low.. I was pretty sure it was around $1400? And I'm guessing my $1850ish is with a "college savings plan" kicker that I had signed up for..
I had the opportunity to do some nice overseas contracting right after I got out but am very glad that I went ahead and decided to knock out this degree.

Where are my Boeing guys? What does the Assembler A/B/C mean? Not the assembler part but the A/B/C?
Just had a head hunter from Chipton-Ross contact me for about 30 minutes. Put me in for an Assembler B.

Thanks Scotty, all things I have been qualified in. So far I have made it to Lean Six Sigma Green belt but would love to go further, and have been qualed in Quality Assurance. Would be great if this worked out for me, still going part time school even if I get it. Would love to work into management in time and would need the degree I am sure.

Those contract jobs will be temporary with not much chance to go direct. They are bringing in people to give directs time off over the holidays.
But, it's a door in the door.
I will respond more later when not on my phone.

That is what he said and he did mention "with the possibility to hire full time". I see that as impress the shit out of them and if that doesn't work by then I will be receiving my disability and can afford to go back to school full time. This Dec class is booked but the Jan class is open which is what I am trying to get into.

Military Retiree + disability of 10% or more= VA Rehab Program and some good tax free bennies
30% or more and you can start a small business and be designated as a "Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business" (SDVOSB), the coveted socioeconomic status a business can have. Getting into government contracts can be very lucrative when you have an SDVOSB status.

I ended up with 70%, 50% for sure for sleep apnea. I just wanted to see about surgery for snoring and ended up with a damn machine. Know nothing about the business aspect of what you mentioned.

Trust me, I was like WTF? I snore, as most men do I assume. I was having some issues with the wife over it. Recall a friend of mine had surgery to correct it. I went to see the Doc and she said I needed a sleep study. Did that and was diagnosed with mild to high sleep apnea. Got a machine to help me sleep blah blah blah. When I retired and applied for other areas of disability I have he said sleep apnea was 50%! I was like, so you lose an arm in war and it's 10% and having a tuff time sleeping is 50%?? He said yup.

It's a case of it wouldn't bother me in the least if they came out and said it wasn't worthy enough for 50%, or even 10%. I got the machine to help, shouldn't that be enough?

Just got a call from the headhunter. I got hired as a contractor for 6 months at Boeing starting on the 13th, great news! I take that as 6 months to bust my ass in order to get hired directly.
