I thought I would share this, as most of you will appreciate the work and the result.

I found this old knife in my father in-laws stuff. It was really weird and beat up and the scales (handle) were broken. So I took the handles off, buffed the blade out and sharpened it. Not shown in this pic is that I also cut off the second bolster off of the handle. Seemed pointless and didn't feel good in my big hands. .

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt205/buddy_dane/foundblank_zps1c427064.jpg (http://s612.photobucket.com/user/buddy_dane/media/foundblank_zps1c427064.jpg.html)

Then I decided to make some scales for it with some carbon fiber I bought on eBay that turned out to be pretty crappy. Proceeded and made some scales and pinned them on. Sanded to 600 dry, then 800 and 1200 wet.

Turned out pretty good I think....

So I bought a Kukri style blade blank off of eBay. It's 14" long and weighs a LOT. I paid $13 for it, lol already sharpened! Same process as the other one, except I used some THICK carbon I found on eBay that was WAY BETTER. Sanded same deal, and got some AWESOME results. So, the rescue of the original knife turned into something I'm really enjoying, and it's not very expensive......thoughts?

Yeah, the bench was dirty, lol.

So, I've been on eBay, scoring some cool blade styles for $5 or so a piece for 440C stainless blades, already sharpened, including shipping. And some pretty cool wood slabs on there as well for about $8 a pair. This could be fun.....

Sweet. I've done a lot of those from blanks and put on the scales. I want to start making my own blades and send them out for heat treat next.

When I get to a computer later tonight I'll post a few links to some other places I order from. I'm working on a Damascus knife now with camel bone scales I think is going to turn out pretty good.

It's really rewarding. I just finished this one. Found a couple of spots on the spine I need to step back to 120 on for a minute but I'm digging this wood though.

Hammer forged "otter skinner" with leopard wood scales and paracord lanyard.

Man those are awesome. I've been eyeing those custom rods like that, that's really cool.

Thanks for the links!

No problem. The custom rods are cool. I used the ones I did on my knife and father in laws knife because we also share the love for guns / shooting and those pins look like a revolver cylinder.

Zebra wood skinner with stone-washed blade. The scales were bookmatched pieces of wood, so the grain is consistent across the blade for the most part.

Superglue. It can be sanded and polished after its dry so it doesnt show up anymore and you can coat the entire handle and sand and polish for a very high gloss finish.

Will work on the super glue. I have lots of viscosities of CA, thanks.

Here's one I did this morning for a friend.

"Bengal tiger" G10 scales, on a 440C Stainless "Raptor" blade from premium knife supply. Feels pretty good in the hand. Really liking the G10 and the color options.....

Last night's project.......

I got this old meat cleaver from a friend who was going to sell it at the flea market. I paid $20 for it and am super glad I did. I can't find much info online about the maker, but it's OLD for sure.

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt205/buddy_dane/Knives/before_zps66a7b33f.jpg (http://s612.photobucket.com/user/buddy_dane/media/Knives/before_zps66a7b33f.jpg.html)

It's stamped "Royal Brand Cutlery CO, USA" and is 3/16" thick, and HEAVY. The tang was not finished, with burrs along the edges, and the center sections rough and not finished. I wanted to retain some of the "character" of the blade, so I didn't get too aggressive with the sanding, but I took all the rust away.

I started with 46 grit, worked to 80, then 100/150/220/400/500. These 2 pictures are at 500 grit. Notice the "pitting" in the second pic. This is the stuff I wanted to "preserve" in the final product for history's sake:

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt205/buddy_dane/Knives/during_zpsd894fc95.jpg (http://s612.photobucket.com/user/buddy_dane/media/Knives/during_zpsd894fc95.jpg.html)

After 1200 grit:

And after 2000:

Tonight I will polish the blade and finish the edge on it. When I got it, you couldn't cut butter with the thing, so I put a preliminary edge on it last night, and will hone it tonight after polishing the blade.

I have decided on Gabon Ebony scales, SUPER SUPER dark wood, should be nice when it's completed......

I actually sold two knives today, so the hobby can continue, while funding itself, and keeping the ole lady off my back about the $$.

Some more work to share....

First is a filet knife that was sold to a friend of mine, to be a gift to his brother in law. It is a panfish/trout filet knife, sharp on the swage of the knife as well (top of spine at tip)..... Scales are Desert Ironwood, with a mosaic pin thrown in for looks. This wood is gorgeous.....

Next is an oyster knife done in Figured Maple, with mosaic pins. This was sold to another friend, as a gift for his best man in his wedding coming up very soon. I am also doing more basic knives for all of his groomsmen....

And my new favorite. This is an oyster knife done in Stabilized Spalted Maple Burl, with black G10 liners (piece between scales and blade), with 6 stainless pins. This wood is exquisite (read: expensive) and was done for a friend of mine as a gift for his wife for their anniversary. He wanted a "camo" look but done in wood.....this fit the bill quite well.

Been busy, done a lot, SOLD a lot, lots more in the works. Here's some pics....

Next is a skinner, this is Desert Ironwood from Arizona, super super awesome wood....

Next is a skinner, hammer forged blade, genuine Olive Wood scales from Bethlehem secured with BRASS pins, my first time. Really rare and hard to obtain wood, with paracord lanyard.

Next are some revolver grips that were brought to me by a friend. He was restoring an old top-break revolver for his father in law, and he broke one of the already rusted and bad looking grips in half. So I epoxied it back together, removed most of the rust, and polished them back up. The grips are made of a resin, so the rust was actually IN the material. Couldn't get it all out.

This is how they came to me:

I'm glad you keep posting, I really enjoy looking at these. One of these days I would like to see what I can try to throw together. Keep of the nice work!

Thanks man, more to come. Some crazy exotic woods coming in, lots to do for Father's Day, so little time.

Can't post pics until after Father's Day though, already got someone busted on their gift....whoops!

Knife guys, do you know where a solid brass blade about 8" could be found? I need something non ferrous and not ceramic. Thanks

Not sure the intent of this, but a brass blade will be horrible for edge retention.

A quick google search turns up nothing......

I didnt think about titanium being non ferrous but i dont think that would be an option for us. I was trying to find something brass or copper to cut hot plastic extrusion and not damage our extrusion tips like a stainless blade will do over time. As far as edge retention its like cutting butter so thats not a big concern. I may look into some sort of aluminum blade also.
