I was leaving my neighborhood yesterday in my 05 crew cab dmax and was turning left onto the main road of the neighborhood and heard a popping noise. I didn't think anything of it and tried to repeat the turning motion to see if it would do it again, and nothing. Steering still worked, so I trucked on. Then I was turning left again onto the main road out of the neighborhood and pull out and nothing! There was a car coming down the same lane I was turning to and a ditch straight in front of me. So I slammed on the brakes and slammed it into reverse and hauled ass in reverse.

If this thing would have broken while I was on the interstate just like I was headed to on my way to work, this could have ended much worse. I got it fixed this morning. I don't know if I would call that good luck or bad luck. I'm guessing that the most likely time for it to happen is when your sitting still with the most strain on the gear box.

Anyone ever have this happen to them?

Did the pitman arm come apart at the ball end of the swivel stud?

I have heard similar noises from the front of mine. Might be time to go ahead and replace some parts this week. Ugh. Money pit.

swivel stud snapped on the pitman arm side. It was extremely hard to get it out of the centerlink.
