I am looking into buying a gun from an individual here in SC? How does the laws work? What do i have to do to get the gun in my name? How does all of this work?

Bill of Sale is all I do, but you can go through a gun shop as well.

Does it take long to transfer the name of the previous owner of the gun into my name?

There aren't any laws requiring paperwork when selling from individual to individual. It is wise to have a bill of sale if you are buying or selling to someone you don't really know, but its not required by law. If there ever comes a time when a firearm is actually registered or titled in your name, then government confiscation would surely follow soon afterwards.
Dealers have a FFL (Federal Firearms License), and are required to fill out an ATF form 4473 when selling a firearm. They call up the national background check hotline with the buyter's info and get an authorization code if the buyer is legit and record it on the form 4473. The dealer has to keep the form 4473 on file for I think 7 years (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that). After that, they can dispose of them. The form 4473 simply just stays on file with the selling dealer, and is not automatically turned in to the government. However, if the FFL loses their license, or closes up shop, then they have to turn over all the form 4473s they still have on file to the ATF.

I downloaded a Firearms bill of sale off the net and use it. I also only buy from anyone that has a concealed weapons permit. The bill of sale I use has a spot for the persons address, drivers license and CWP info. They get a copy, I get a copy.

I don't do any paperwork, just make sure they have a cwp and that's good enough for me.
