View Full Version : Moser or Strange axles for ford 9"

We plan on putting a 9" Ford in the back of the s-15. Axles is a dilemma that we have come across. Unsure of whether to run Strange or Moser at this point. Will be 31 spline and a "custom" length. If you have experience with both please let me know.
Do not say "go with brand x because they that is all I see people run, and advertise everywhere". We want something that is going to hold what is thrown at it and not have to worry a couple months down the road to change out.
I guess Paul is the only one that might have a 9" under his car. So what axles do you have?
I do know that Moser has a better warranty on the items but eh, sometimes that isn't good. lol

Who re-splined them?
Paul. Have you actually dealt with Moser via phone or emails? If so, how was the customer service/feedback from them?

John Dega. He used to own Springfield Motorsport. He shortened a 57 big car rear end for my 66 and put a Auburn locker in as well.

I don't have a 9 inch rearend, but I run Mosier axles and spool in the grocery getters 8.8 rearend. Oh and there 9 inch end tubes, on my 8.8. Long story short, my 8.8 "C" clip eliminators leaked, so Mosier use to sell 9 inch end tubes for the 8.8, that way instead of "C" clip eliminators, you run 9 inch bearings, seals, and backing plates to hold them in, and no more leaks. I have a set of their 31 and 33 spline axles. Never broke any of their stuff...:bigthumb:

i had Moser 35 spline in the Trans Am. I had Moser 31 spline in the coupe i sold not too long ago. I had moser 31 spline in my 04 cobra. I had moser 31 spline in my 93 cobra. I never had any problems with any of them.
BUT- i can tell you that alot of the big chassis shops (Sheppard, SkinnyKid, etc) use Strange.

Just going to the wrong track, Brandon. Saturdays are better than Sundays. With that, who wants to get their ass shot off when there is somewhere else to go.

What other track are you talking about? Only thing they didnt have was scoreboards. Plenty of freaking gnats and mosquitos though.
I believe I am going to go with Strange axles though. Going to be different I suppose.

Strange pro race 33 spline seem to hold up pretty good :bigthumb:
Chris
My stock axles seem to hold up fine. :hide:
The ford is 4,800lb with 700 ftlbs of torque, and a 1.49 60'.
The dodge is 7,000 lb with ~700 ftlb, and a 2.1 60'

so the new excuse to not come to Dorchester is the risk of being shot? Are you kidding me? Driving to work every morning is more likely to send you to the hospital than goin to Dorchester.
been going 10+years, and almost every other sunday for the past 5 years, only 1 shot fired the entire time.
More gun fire at my old high school then Dorchester has ever seen.

Personally, I didnt want to go to Dorchester on a Sunday. Went on a saturday instead. Didn't feel like unloading a trailer and going home LATE as balls. Who fucking cares where I go race at? Big f-ing deal. I will go to orangeburg or so next. You will see me at dorchester when I want to go and?

Well, I would wuote everyone; but that would take way to damn long. I guess I should have worded my comment better.
Let's try it this way:
By the time Dorchester's track really gets working good, the money starts to come out. I just don't want to get involved in someone else's shit just because I am standing in the wrong spot at the time. I have been to Dorchester, and I am sure I will be back there again. Given a choice, though, I will likely go somewhere else. Bowman was actually not all that bad. When we got there, they were drying the track with blowers, then they sprayed the track, then they dragged the track. When, on the second pass out, someone had their suspension all wrong and hit the wall; they stopped everything to make sure it wasn't the track. I have not seen that attention to prep at Dorchester. It may get done-I just haven't seen it.

The proof is in the pudding- most people will tell you that some of their best 60' times are at Dorchester. I don't give a damn what they do or don't do to it, it works.
If you think Bowman doesn't have a rough crowd too, then you left too early.

We left when the announcer said "TRACK IS SHUT DOWN AND NO MORE RACING THIS EVENING, SEE YOU NEXT TIME" This was around 11:45 or so.
My 60' never changed in the mustang at any track I went to. Unless it was not prepped. But than again I had a car slow like slowgreens.

I actually matched my best-ever 60' (originally set at Route 66 in Joliet, IL) at Lowcountry; but we all know what happened there. Somebody may not like me doing holeshots out of their driveway.
I guess I just never got Dorchester "Figured out"
Oh, well. Looks like my engine's on its way back (LOOOOOOONG story), so maybe I'll just turn the Bronco II into a wierd-ass drag car after all. Time to buy another daily.
Some of my best 60fts have happened around 6 -7 pm or right after sunset .
You mention the track gets good when the money comes out . The money comes out about the same time Bowman says track is closed .

I will go to dorchester again. but not anytime soon as truck is about to be torn down.....hopefully. Getting the O/T coming it to pay for these things.
But I am thinking between strange or a set of Mike davis axles. We shall see depending on other parts of the build.

I'm probably the most whitebread guy on this board...not even from the south, and I don't feel uneasy one bit about Dorchester dragway. You're 100x more likely to get wrecked by a jalopy on the roads around here than getting "ganked" at Dorchester.
Chew on this fact: I've been to Dorchester probably 100 times (went heavily in '05 and '06)...never had a problem. Went to cooper river 5 or 6 times and my Lightning got keyed all down the right side. I hole nothing against Cooper river and would still go there, if they were open (just park in a better area). IMO, you run just as much risk of receiving bodily harm at a bar than a dragstrip.
Anyway. If both axle manufacturers produced comparable products, I would pick whichever one had the better customer service.

Hey puss, your comment makes no sense.
Just thought id tell ya. :bigthumb:
whether YOUR car was slow or not, your 60' can always change, just go find some more excuses as to why your scared to run at Dorchester
And yes, Dorchester cleans/preps the track pretty frequently due to the ghetto ass cars that run there. If theres a "big" race, the track actually works pretty damn good. If a car carries the tires to the 330, then im gonna guess that his setup, along with decent track prep seems to be workin

Where did I say I was scared of Dorchester?
I just said that I ran at another track that you evidently were not at. And if it matters to YOU, I went to Bowman to meet some people there and race and make a day out of it.
Also, my black truck is not my daily driver. I tow it with a trailer that is NOT mine. When I go to Dorchester I will leave before 10:00-10:30 so I can drop the trailer back off and head home to get ready for work the next day. Call me a pussy for leaving early. Hell when I went this year just to spectate I was leaving around 9. Hell, I may have missed alot of shit.
So, who cares where I race. I will race at Dorchester sometime this year. But I just won't limit myself to one track. Is that a problem?
I have ran a previous car I owned at Dorchester many of times. So I am not afraid to go there. In my black truck I am too slow to worry about anything. You will see me one day. And I am sure I will run your car also. I don't care. Just won't see me anytime soon as I am about to be a benchracer as the truck will be torn down to get that "one axle" installed. :D
