The 99 Cobra is frustrating me. I have to put 800 more miles on it so I can have some warranty work done. Went out today to run it while up on jack stands and noticed the speedometer isn't working. I dropped it down and drove it but still not working. Also it won't start without a jump even though it has a fully charged new battery. I can't figure out why the speedo quit working or why it won't start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :D

Jason, I think they have speed sensors in them so no cable for the speedo. Could be a fuse or bad connection to the sensor or it is just unplugged. Possibly bad sensor itself. As for the battery, did you buy it new?

It's an Optima Redtop, purchased about a year ago. Maybe it's the alternator or starter. I'll check the speedo connection.

If you have the receipt, take the battery back and have them test it.
Mike bought a brand new Optima and it was defective and had to go back and get another. Just a suggestion if you don't have a load tester. If it jumps starts. I doubt very seriously it is the starter or cables on the starter.

For the starting issue. Double check the battery cables. Take them off and look for corosion and make sure they are snug when you put them back on. If they aren't making good contact you interior lights and everything may still work......but no start.

I would take the battery to get tested like they said. It could have gone bad.

Also, I know on my thunderbird, some times it would start and run fine and sometimes it had a hard start problem. For me it was the Cam position sensor. (they go bad on tbirds a lot I guess) Anyway, it looks like the cobra has one too. Just a thought.

For some reason the parts stores cant test optima batteries. They just give you a new one as long as you have the receipt. Also I've had the same trouble you are having with the battery, and it was the battery. Optima batteries don't like to be run dead. If you do run one dead you can't just jump them, they need to be trickle charged back to full charge. I think it must burn them up some how. Anyway I would just return it and get a new one. Good luck

Thanks for the advise, I talked to Advance and they will exchange batteries for me. That should solve the starting problem but I still have to fix the speedo issue.

All problems solved. Must have been a bad battery. Advance exchanged me a new one for no charge. Car runs great (the speedo is even working now) and I put 50 miles on it in my driveway last night.
