What all is needed to turbo a carb setup?
I know of the following but I am sure there is more.
Manifolds
Blow through carb
turbo(s)
Intercooler
Piping
Feed line to oil pan
Wastegate
wideband (preferred to me)
new plugs

That is all I know. i am trying to do research on either doing a turbo setup or doing h/c/i and nitrous and set it up for nitrous.
If you know of any more items or sites that can help for the Do It yourselfer I would appreciate it. Just throwing some ideas around.

Good ignition and fuel systems (Boost referenced timing and fuel pressures)

And go here

http://www.theturboforums.com/smf/index.php?board=13.0 LOTS of carb turbo info as well as other general turbo setup and tech.

You gotta build it first, Eric.

Your car will still be faster. I am not looking at a setup with a turbo the same size as a watermelon

Make sure whatever carb you choose has solid plastic floats. If you run the old style hollow brass ones they will collapse under boost pressure.

Make sure that you get a top hat for the carb that can hold whatever boost pressure you plan to run along with a boost reference fuel pressure regulator. Everything else should be the usual turbo plumbing that you would see on a FI turbo setup.

Thanks Gerald and Bradley. Just trying to do a Nitrous build cost and Turbo build cost. Not even considering a SC build cost yet. Undecided at this time. We shall see. I believe I want a turbo setup more than nitrous right now. But have to lay everything all out vs cost and power blah blah blah

My wallets aren't deep enough to go that fast. I realized something you have a Blue 'bird. Wasn't there a company making school buses called "bluebird". And weren't they slow and turbocharged? :hide:

the difference between the two is about twice as much money, a bigger tuning headache, and a bigger learning curve. but with that said, the turbo is the way to go.

I understand about the headaches. But I am in no rush to get it completed. Will collect all parts first than go at it.

Best link for turbo info IMO.

Depending on what the motor combo is you can do it cheap. If the motor is together and I assume its something in the 350 inch range.. a pair of T3/T4 hybrids can be picked up cheap. Not OPTIMUM for a 350 inch motor but would be a great starting point. Buy a box of the tubing from Summit, some ebay exhaust flanges and build your own headers Or flip some stock shorty's if that will work on a Chebby, I have no idea.

Fab them up and tack them together yourself and have someone with a good tig welder finish them up.. just take your time and you'll be set.

Once you go turbo, you won't go back!

true, but what i meant was........
to build a decent/nice turbo setup versus building a decent/nice nitrous setup is going to be twice the money. Sure, you can build a turbo setup for the same money if you cut a bunch of corners, but you could take that same dollar amount and build a nice nitrous setup and go faster.
If you are going to go turbo, you cannot cut corners if you want it to work worth a crap, especially blow thru. From electronics to wastegates, its all very important.
I would just buy a decent set of heads and a few extra pistons and shoot the balls off of it.

It currently has forged pistons in it now. steel crank blah blah blah. Internally it is strong. If I have been looking at afr eliminator 195 heads if i go nitrous and with a nitrous cam and maybe a super victor or victor jr intake. Would really love to have lt's or fenderwell headers if I went nitrous as well.

Of course I might just spend the next couple months researching some more on turbos and go that route. Truck isn't my daily and really in no hurry to get out racing. Can take the time to build it if need be. I think with a turbo I might be happier even if it is more complicated. No bottles to fill and no belts or pullies to change for more power.

In the end you would probably be happier with the turbo. Like you said your not in any hurry to get it done. Build what you really want the first time.
