Im just wondering if its worth the money paying to get your car dyno tuned. I bought my motor with my distributor installed off of racingjunk.com and my time is about 3tenths off from where I should be. My car is set up exactly like his one(also my car is only 40lbs lighter than his with me in it). With the motor in his car he shifted at 7000rpm and in my car I have to shift at 6500 because if I shift at 7000rpm I lose almost tenth.

He lives in Morehead City, NC and I live in Charleston, SC(5 hours away) Im guessing I need to get it tuned in my area. My mph is 106 and his mph was 114. I was told that maybe there is a good amount of hp being lost some where and a dyno tune could help me. Im willing to pay for it, but I dont want to pay for it with no results.

You can tune it at the track by experimenting with jet and timing changes as long as your car is consistant. The nice thing about the dyno is the repeatability in a controlled and probably safer environment. Unless you have datalogging in the car to give you a pictur of what the engine is doing, you only have ET's and MPH's to compare performance gains and losses.

You can usually acomplish in 2 hrs on a dyno what may take you a whole day at the track.

I prefer the dyno first and I know a few racers who would tell you the same.

Dyno tuning is money well spent. You get to see what's going on with the engine. One very important factor is getting air/fuel ratio dialed in so you don't run too lean and ruin a perfectly good engine. Chris Tuten in Columbia is very good at tuning. Carb or EFI, no problem. He works with his brother Brian @ The Muffler Shop of Columbia.

did the carb come with the engine?

is that in the 1/8th mile the mph? 8 mph could be hundreds of hp difference

Transmissions the same? Same rear gear?

What time of year was he doing his testing vs yours?

same electronics? Same carb?

same tires? Same suspension?

there is actually a couple of variables that could explain it.

But yes, dyno tuning can be worth it. I agree with electech 100%

I have 30x10.5 and he had 33x16. Both Cars have 4-link suspension
I have msd 7al plus acessories(auto shifter, 2 step, etc).

He had 33in tall tires with 5:14 gears and I have 30in tall tires so I went to 4:88s but it took too long to shift so I went to 5:14s also and now it going through the tracks at 6000rpm so im good there.

Im not sure about his time of year. The Carb and distributor did come with the engine installed, but it was bogging when you hit the gas from idle from day 1 so I dont know what that was all about he said it didnt do that when he had it. We he played with the carb a lil and it stopped doing that but it only doesnt do it when the hit is 160 degreez or higher.

A dyno tune is some of the best money you'll ever spend on an engine. Don't forget to obtain a print out from the dyno operator!

It's the best mod you'll ever buy. I had mine tuned last week and the only reason I didnt have it tuned earlier was it ran so good I didnt think it would make much more power. When I got there the first pull was 755 before he started tuning. After about 5 pull's he was up to 1087 . After last Sunday's trip to Dorchester I now have suspension problem's. I wish there was such a thing as a suspension dyno. But for 200 buck's what mod can you buy that will give you over 300hp???

Well I finally got dyno tuned today. Im not gonna discuss numbers, but I gained 45hp and 45 foot lbs of torque so Im happy with that. I went to CPR Performance Tuning and Dyno, 1440 Charleston Hwy, West Columbia 803-796-1251 and they are good guys and it only took them an hour to tuned the car. I found out I was shifting too late also, I was shifting at 7000rpm when my motor stopped making power at 6400rpm. It saved me alot of time and money by not having to go to the track over and over to test with NO result which was getting frustrating. From now on Dyno Tuning will be my first route to success.

I had an issue with my oil blowing outa my intake at high rpms so I took my mufflers off and that problem is gone!! Moroso Spiral Flows were too restrictive. Thanx to everyone that recommended me to DYNO TUNE

I would call that a good day and money well spent. That sounds like some good gains too. Now, lets hear that translate into some timeslips!
