View Full Version : Help! Someone please make this decision for me....

I am down to the 11th hour on this damn car.
I CAN NOT decide what to do as far as the outside.
Here is what I know:
1. There are a million black mustangs, my body style, at the racetrack. There are several that are in my class. Several of them have the turbo through the front and all that and you already can't tell them from one another.
2. So that means I DO NOT WANT A PLAIN BLACK CAR.
3. Slight problem. I would change the color. i would love to paint it Dark Charcoal Grey like my truck, and like all the powder coating on the car but........the engine bay is already black, door jambs black, trunk jamb black, inside inner fenders black, you get the point.....
As far as the wrap-
It is the best option to do WHATEVER you want but.....it's a 15 hour drive or i can have it printed and installed local but when it's all said and done it would be more than a paint job. AND after closely looking at wraps, the UPCLOSE quality sorda sucks. Even on a nice wrap, you can tell it was printed.
SO.....
I thought I had decided to paint it Satin Black....then I found out that you cannot polish it or buff it, etc because it will rub a shine into it and overall make it a spotty finish. As picky as I am, and as clean as I like to keep my cars, I don't want anything I can't wax or buff.
SO IT BRINGS ME TO MY LATEST IDEA...I WANT SOME HONEST OPINIONS.....
Thinking about going two tone. Black on top, with the dark charcoal grey on the bottom, and of course some black ass windows and the wheels are already black with the charcoal grey beadlock. The paint break would be somewhere close to the top of the fenders.
What do you guys think?

The two tone sounds good. How do you feel about flames? Get it painted black with some charcoal gray ghost flames

Since everything is already black, I would add some other type of graphics; flames, racing stripe(s), racing stripe(s) with flames, or even just a penstripe or two down the side.

Years ago some of the Saleen Mustangs came faded black to gray to silver and they looked pretty good, but they were fox bodies. Also check the rule book about dark tinted windows, because I know you will be running at sanctioned events...:bigthumb:

The way cars like yours get so much tv and magazine coverage, personally I would want some sort of bright color integrated into the paint scheme, something that someone would easily recognize as Wes Whittle's car as soon as they see it. I think something in red (or whatever bright color you choose) going across at least the cowl hood, and/or roof and trunk, would look badass. I saw some beautiful red and black paint schemes at FFW Atlanta a couple of years ago on some fast street cars. That way you don't have to change the jambs.

You could do something different, like a lime green pin strip, then again, you cant go wrong with two tone on a mustang though. There are a ton of things you can add as an after thought to set it apart from the other car even if you keep it balck.

have the car rebodied into a old ford powerhouse car like a cougar or pinto

its not my csr but, i say no on the two tone. i personally think it is played out on both street cars and race cars. if anything, keep it black but do some sort of side graphics to set it apart. that way if you change your mind you can take them off and do a different set or whatever without having to paint again.
I think you should do a design like this .

Just in the colors your talking about but with a green out line on it .

Been dealing with this all day....still haven't made up my mind....stay tuned.
One thing i didn't think about was the $$$$ difference going from a satin to a regular paint that has to bling. The color sanding alone makes a decent $$ difference. It is what it is at this point, I just want to get it done.
I might see about some sort of flame deal, still trying to figure it all out. I would like to do it two tone AND have some sort of flame job. The only problem with that is when I run it down the guardrail it will be alot more expensive to fix.

I am aware of that rule and I do not care. My windows will be black and I bet noone will ever say a thing.....NMRA is the only one that cares about that and my car is not NMRA legal.
Now watch me have to tear the tint off the first race just because i said that...

Are you getting help for your OCD?
J/K, paint choice can be a big decision. I would err on the side of simple for the repair aspect as well.

I agree. Whatever you do, your car should stick out instantly.

i would go for instantly recognizable.
why do all the motor work, and then be mistaken for some one else?
you should go see a 2009 Screaming Eagle Road Glide in silver (they call it platinum)
go see one in person. see how long it takes to pick out the ghost flames in the pin stripe

Graphics are nice and make your ride stand out but getting them repaired after an oops can be a pain. Flat/satin black is bad ass no matter what its on but theres too many mustangs already out there. At the last orsca race i think i counted 4 flat black mustangs. Personally id go with a 2 tone but thats only b/c i did. I havnt seen too many locally so it would still make your ride stand out (not that it wont already). The black and dark gray would be good just break it up with a bright stripe.
I did see a mustang up in charlotte where the deck lid, hood and roof were diff color. may be kind of ricey but it was different.
just my .02

You said some thing about the murdered look. Which I'm thinking is flat black.
What if you had a bright red splatter on the front on top of the flat black. Kinda like it hit and killed something.

I like your two tone idea dark charcoal on bottom black on top, and possibly with some sort of graphic dividing line between the two colors.

paint each panel a different color and then you can use all the colors you like and it WILL stand out:bigthumb:

The only solid color i could do is black and that is not going to happen. there are a million already. any other color and i have to redo too much stuff and i can't afford to redo anything else.
i think i have all this figured out...maybe.
Black up top, charcoal grey on the bottom. At a minimum it will have a bright red pinstripe between the two colors. I may do red flames between the two colors in a style or pattern similar to the flames on Steve Jackson's car..........hard to explain. Not sure on the flame part yet, but pretty sure on the two tone deal.
I will probably change my mind again tomorrow, i think i am on plan 6 by now.

Clear (see through) body panels would be badass.

I would do the two tone, and do it in a cheap manner that is easily repeatable for repairs,
and i would use a vinyl graphic pinstripe to separate the two colors,
and then you could have it repainted and re-graphiced in a week or so, and be back on the track.

barb wire (http://www.edecals.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=edecals&Product_Code=PSD112)
a guy on the Harley forums has that on his bike, and people are CRAZY over it, he trailed it all over the bike, and heated it with a hair dryer to wrap around the corners.
he everyone loves it, and no one can tell it's a sticker.
WWhittle
08-12-2009, 09:18 AM
I'm staying away from any type of sticker because i don't want to deal with the wax line. It will probably end up being a fairly simple pinstripe of some sort to seperate the two colors.
Picking it up tomorrow and dropping it off to painter middle of next week.

The horses look like something out of a cartoon but imagine them in various shades of silver over your black paint and made to look muscular and angry, perhaps with the maine and tails on fire?

Notice the color of the engine bay..
I like the Mopar but with the graphics suggested by Jeff to separate the black and silver would look best.
