I finally got my trans out and I need to sell it. Most everyone that wants to buy it is out in CA. So I need to find a way to get it to them. Anyone have an idea of where to send it out from?

i just picked one up from conway trucking in pepperdam park on ashley phosphate road. cost me around 100 bucks. i don't know if they will ship for an individual but if so all you would have to do is put it on a pallet with some shrink wrap. 767 8199 is their phone number. hope this helps

Thanks for the replies. I'm hoping it costs less than 200 bucks to ship it. Do they provide you with a pallet or how does that work?

if you need a pallet. LMK. I can get MANY from work. Plus, put a couple of 2x4's on the side of the transmission to help sturdy it. ANother thing to consider when shipping is get some small cable and go from side to side to hold it down. If you need help I can help you out if need be. If you have a truck and want that pallet give me a call 813-3157 and you can meet me around 4pm monday through friday for it. Or wait until I can get my wifes truck and bring it to ya.

i use motorcylce tie down straps.
i would DEFINITELY make SURE it won't leak.
i take my stuff to www.SEFL.com up by the pig distro center on I-26, but they dont always give you the correct estimate, so make sure you get the right type of bill, you can ask Melinda at 695-2300
you put the pallet on your truck, the tranny on the pallet, and pack/wrap/seal/strap it all in,
and they fork lift it off for you.
hth?

Most LTL companys will have a pallet for you (Wilson, Old Dominion, Southeastern, Yellow, Roadway, Conway, Triple A Cooper)
I can almost garauntee you that without a hellacious discount, you wont be getting it to Cali for under $200. With my "employee" discount, it cost me $165 to ship to Missouri. Just a heads up, a lot of these companys DO NOT have shipping insurance, so choose wisely! I would try and get you a good rate through Wilson, but we are a South East based campany and use partner carriers out west.
That being said, I would hit up Mach Killer and see what kind of rate he can get you at Old Dominion. They are a national carrier, so it would help. A weight IS A MUST when getting a quote. You dont want to assume its a certain weight, and it be over, because they will recharge you with the difference, which could really suck.
Good luck with the sale, and shipping!
PS ****you didnt hear this from me, but I wouldnt use Saia or Yellow****

I used saia to ship my motor to Houston, they quoted me $130 for it. Then when they received it from me they saw that it was an engine block and proceded to estimate the weight at 800lb. The actual weight was a little over 200lb (LS1). I did not figure this out until I got the bill for almost $500.
Make sure you bring it to them (someone other than saia) and witness them weighing the item or they could really screw you over. It took me weeks of phone calls to get mine straightened out.

DO NOT ship UPS Freight! Unless, of course, you are made of money.

x2, I got a quote for the same trans to go to Missourri from them, and it was $795 just for shipping! Thats why you get an account with them though and you usually get like 90% discounts

here's what SEFL does:
they weigh it on the forklift, and tell you the weight,
and charged me $260 for 500lbs to Tampa
somewhere "midway" they process it for size and "final frieght billing"
and that was like $480.
the difference was that it was "bulky" (it was plastic dunnage)
so they changed the charges from weight to bulk
so they put it on HOLD until i paid the difference.
that's why you have to wait until Melinda is there, and talk to her when you drop it off.
the guys on the dock will do you wrong :(

That doesnt make sense. The guys on the dock shouldnt tell you a quote or anything like that, and it should be rated via a class and weight.

Thanks for all the replies. I really don't have a way to weigh it for the estimate, but I suppose that should be the first thing I do.

estes did a reall good job with my motor/tranny ship 2 years ago.. they price it from the size of the pallet in a square footage and weight. make site its wraped well and strapped down well.. but in any case as long as those are done you should have no issues.

I'm hopefully going to get up with Hal and get the pallet and then try and weigh it somewhere. I got an est from estes to ny and it was $178, but to CA it was $364.
