i been running with the stock lsd that has new clutches and stock axles. well im looking at going to 5 lug with some new wheels and the question i am tossing around and keep in mind i drive it on the street all the time....

1. go with a spool some 31 spline axles and c clip eliminators

or

2. leave the lsd thats in there that works pretty good and just get stronger 5 lug axles.

im trying to keep cost down as low as possible but still know that it will work ok so a locker would be out the question i think. lmk what ya think

5 lug wheels are good for more wheel choices, but I still run 4 lugs and haven't broke them yet. Now I do have bigger studs, and 33 spline axles. I have always heard that people that break their wheel studs, typically left them loose or they loosened up on their own, and thats what caused the stud to break. I have an Eaton lsd for sale in the for sale section, and its 31 spline. I have spools in the notchback and the LTD, and in the street they can be a little noisey when turning in a circle or turning into a parking spot..:bigthumb:

its not so much the strength issue for the 5 lug swap just mainly the wheels and while i am doing it i was looking to do some upgrades. yeah the 4 lug stock axles have done great and i also have the larger long studs but just wanting to go 5 lug i guess. will the stock lsd handle much with a auto foot braking? or will that become and issue?

Oh, It will become an issue sooner or later. You'll get the one wheel peel.

Both of my cars are footbrake cars. I have never owned a car with a transbrake. What was funny was I posted a while back that I didn't understand how all I did was install a spool and picked up 1.5 tenths on the gas. Well if you stand toward the starting line at the track, some cars sound like their tires are spinning all the way down the track, well that must have been what was happening to me the carrier was wore out and opening up down the track and I was loosing time..:bigthumb:

If money is the concern pull out the track lok weld the piss out of it and put it back in. (Thats what I did) If your gonna buy new axles though might as well step up to 31 splines and a full spool (Thats what I'm gonna do lol)

My Track-Lok was giving up the ghost on the burnout resulting in only one wheel spinning and was causing me to spin bad out of the hole. Havent run it on the track since I welded it but I can tell you it hooks alot better on the street.

I run lockers on both my cars. They are a little noisy at times but work well.

I've heard people say spools are dangerous in the rain while driving highway speeds. Not sure how much truth there is to that.

I will/am running a spool also. They are also rather cheap in the grand scheme of things.

Definitely can be a little hairy in the rain. But mine was hairy in the rain with the track lok too.

And why is that? They work great. You never have to wonder if both tires are turning and for limited street use they are fine.

I ran a detroit locker and 31 spline moser axles in my cobra, it worked great and i drove it everywhere. Thats what i would recommend.

Thats the same set-up I've got in the Cobra. Works well..

If it was more race than street, then a spool it be.

TaDa! Ive driven cars with spools on the street. It sucks. Im not a "race car" kinda guy. If it affects ride quality or my comfort, forget it. Fat kids gotta have his a/c and i dont want to have to cringe on every turn i make.

If i can crack in to the 7's with my car and my wifes car and still be comfortable, ill be happy. I think it can be done.

Detroit Locker is the way to go on the street. As input torque is increased, the harder it is for one to unlock. They can make a little noise when locking and unlocking going around corners, but at least you know it is the normal operation of the unit. The Powertraxx inserts operate on the same basic principal as the Detroit Locker, but the operating parts are a little smaller. The neat thing about the Powertraxx is that you don't have to deal with resetting your gear contact pattern as you do when going to a DL carrier. On the other hand, a DL with its larger components will take more abuse.

Spools are much cheaper and simpler, though. Spools will require C-clip eliminators or weld on 9" ends with press on axle bearings. If you have a C-clip rearend and are considering going the spool route, don't forget to factor in the cost of these additional items to make a spool package complete. Of course if you already have a Ford 9", you obviously don't have to deal with converting away from C-clips.

Hope this clears up things for those of you trying to decide between the DL or a spool.

I definately would not put a spool in anything that I drove in the street on a regular basis.
