View Full Version : Domestic Muscle Suggestions?

So I recently decided to part out my car and sell the shell, I simply do not have the time or money to build yet another motor. I am not by any means leaving the DSM game, but I would like to see what else is out there as well. I have always loved domestics, but until now have never really seriously considered getting one. It wouldn't be until later in the year probably, but I just wanted to see what's out there.
So I guess I want to hear from those of you with real world experience with these cars, and not internet warriors. I would like to hear what everybody thinks as far as the best platform for bang for your buck modifications. I would also like to stay NA unless I got a Terminator of course. So here are the cars at the top of my list, and please don't turn this into a pissing match lol.
WS6
C5 Corvette
03/04 Cobra
If I'm missing anything good please feel free to add to the discussion, but again, I would love to hear from people who actually have these cars.

I worked at Hendrick for 3 or so years and I loved driving the c5's, they handle well and have enough power to keep you happy. Plus, they are getting cheap!

Have you considered the G8's? Very nice looking car IMO if its in your price range.

If I was in the market for a new car to build up it would be a '98-up GM F body. They are easy to work with and make good power. I've messed with a few LS powered GMs and really like them.

i think a 98 LSx will wake up with the ZO6 intake & mild bolt ons.
our SS dyno'ed ~340 crank bone stock.
you can't beat that, and the hi mile cars are cheap, and parts are plentiful, because some people are parting them out now.

A good friend of mine had a '99 Z28, six speed, factory tires, and bone stock... it went 13.20 at 107 mph with a crappy 2.10 sixty foot.
Another friend has a '00 firebird with only a catback exhaust and K&N that runs high 12s.

Not sure of you age or income, but insurance and gas prices need to be considered.

If you want to drag race a lot and build the car up, I would get the f-body. If not, I would get the c5.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody, I'm not looking to buy one right this minute, I just wanted to see what everybody thought. I'm going to do a looooooot of research before I buy anything, I want to know everything from weight to how much power the stock clutch will hold, all that good stuff. That GTO is pretty sweet but (no offense to anybody) it almost looks too girly, not aggressive enough, and yes I am fully aware that my other fun car is a purple Eclipse lol. I like Camaro's too but they're a dime a dozen. When I see a Camaro driving around I never take a second look, but if I see a Corvette or WS6 or Cobra I always take a second look to see if it's modified. The G8 is a sweet car too but it's out of my price range and is more of a family car in my mind.
I will be turning 25 this year so insurance isn't too killer, and this will be a fun/weekend car so I'm not worried about gas. Thanks again for the suggestions everybody!
P.S. - After reading Van's post, I should clarify: this will be a purely street car, with very occasional track duty, I am not interested in this being a track only car.

c5 vette ...can be had for 10k-low teens. A c5z06 can be had for teens to very very low 20's. Of course the low teens is what I like. Several cars for sale on ls1tech. Go troll over there and get ideas. MANY with mods and several stock.

I have had all three of those and then some.
Out of the 3 you listed, i would get the 03/04 cobra first, the WS6 second and the C5 last.
I am just not a big fan of a vette at all, the 03/04 Cobra is badass on the highway but expensive as a mother if you break anything serious, also a pain in the ass to do any major work too. But, I am a mustang man and I loved mine. I wish i wouldn't have sold it.
The WS6 is easy to work on, lots of aftermarket go fast parts, and lots of power/ potential straight out of the box. Very sexy too!

G8s are not just for family. You could fit three, or four, of your 6' plus friends in it. You could probably search for some used ones now, since they came out in '08 and the '09s were the last of the Pontiacs.

Thanks Wes, this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for, one of the concerns I have with the Cobra is that I've heard its extremely heavy compared to say the C5, how hard is it to do weight reduction while still keeping it streetable?

Really need to know what your budget is to give you a valid answer. But being as you put 03/04 Cobra on there we have to assume you're at least willing to go up to low $20's.
With a budget like that you've got some nice cars to choose from. I'd skip a base C5 and go with the C5Z personally as they're getting really cheap, from high teens to low $20's. They're light and handle incredible, great platform for an all around sick car. Mod's are more expensive with the "vette tax" but it doesn't take much to make them a quick street car.
03/04 Cobra's are just sick bang for the buck cars, they're biggest downfall is the extra weight they carry. You're talking 3600lbs vs 3000lbs for a C5Z. But the power you can make for cheap bolt-ons is sick. It will take some mods to get a Cobra on near the same level handling wise as a Z, but the power and acceleration is incredible. They can handle basically whatever you throw at them. Insurance is a bit more with a Cobra vs a Z06 though, so you might want to get some quotes first.
WS6's I've always loved and thought they looked mean, but don't think they're on the same playing field as the Z and Cobra. They can be had for cheaper so that leaves more mod money I guess, but I'd rather have a better starting platform.

It is heavy compared to a C5, but not bad when you look at the average weight of most sports cars these days. It's a 3600lb car, most sports cars these days are approaching or over the 4k mark. Weight reduction you drop the spare tire/jack (45lbs), go with an off road exhaust (40-50lbs), tubular K-member/a-arms/coilovers (60-70lbs), mott bar on rear (10lbs) and you've pulled 170lbs off the car and made it handle better while not affecting the street manners of the car at all. Start getting a little more into it with dropping the heavy ass factory seats, swap out the factory sounds system for something that actually sounds good and only uses one amp instead of 15, lighter wheels, etc.....and you can get the car down to 3200-3300lbs.

Between those cars, I'd take the '03-04 Cobra.
If the C5Z was an option, it would be a tough choice depending on what you want to do with it. The C5Zs handles/brakes like a super car, but unless you plan on doing track days, I'd take the terminator. It's one of the baddest mustangs ever made, IMNSO.

Ok, Can you come up with a Z28 that was factory equiped with a FI for that model year that we could compare it to? Not our fault that Ford is in the business of building Affordable Factory Muscle Cars. Besides that, He outran the Cobra once he used the Nitrous.

seriously, you just can't beat a good LSx.
we redid the Mustang in my garage pics.
it was rated ~300hp from the factory.
it never SCARED me. it always felt in control, like a go cart.
our LS1 car makes you PLAN ahead where you are going to be BEFORE you stomp the gas.
a lightning is a whole another equation, esp for a DD with just 2 seats.

If your looking to mod on an average budget your gen 3 chevy motors don't take much to bust the 500 hp mark. Head, cam, intake, and exhaust leave the bottom end alone and your there. I don,t know anything from the ford or dodge camp, but im sure they have many pro's as well.
I kind of want to do a c5 vette but don't know if the rear mounted trans and that whole diff setup would cause a problem. I'm just ignorant on that setup.
Happy hunting.
