MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A man threatening to stab people in a Family Dollar parking lot was shot and killed by an armed customer Friday.

It happened outside the Family Dollar on Delano and Watkins.

Witnesses say before he went to Family Dollar, the man with the knife tried to get on a MATA bus with the weapon, but was turned away. Some say he was known in the neighborhood and may have been off his medication.

Police say they started getting calls around 3:00pm about a man, threatening people in the parking lot.

Lt. Col. JM Willis with the Memphis Police Department stated, "the individual was trying to attack numerous people we have a number of witnesses that have said he was wielding a knife at them."

But police say the scene turned deadly when the man with the knife went after a man who was armed with a gun.

Witness Lakisha Gorman said, "He was running up to different people trying to stab them and he ran up to that dude's car as he was pulling out of the driveway and he had a baby in the car with him and he just started trying to stab the dude and the dude pulled a gun out and shot him."

Investigators say there were dozens of witnesses. Two bullet casings were found across the street at the U-Haul.

Witnesses say the shooter stayed on the scene until police arrived. Gorman said, "When police pulled up he laid his gun on the ground and handed them a gun permit or drivers license."

Investigators say the man threatening to stab people died at the scene, still holding the knife in his hand.

Detectives say at this point it looks like the shooting will be ruled justified and the shooter will probably not face any charges.

At this time the incident is still under investigation. Police are not releasing the name of the man who died or the man who shot him.

Just wait for the liberals and anti-gun activists read this. They will say he was in a car and could have rolled his window up, locked the doors, and drove off. "Excessive Force" they will cry and before long the law enforcement will be pressured into filing charges of manslaughter against the shooter... welcome to America.

Oh wait it was in Tennessee. WTG! :)

I hope that there are no charges filed against the shooter. Obviously, this man feared for the life of his child and his own life as well. Kudos to him for doing what had to be done in that situation. Had he just driven off, who may have been attacked next?

Man would have been arrested, deemed MENTALLY UNSTABLE , no charges filed because he didn't harm anybody and been released.
