I just got a text about this. I fly out tomorrow so my girlfriend is all mixed up, great timing..... I hope these guys are ok. This is the first C17 to ever go down that I know of.

doesn't look good for the crew there. Can't punch out of a C-17....

At a press conference Wednesday night, Lt. Gen. Dana Atkins said the C-17 was not an ejection aircraft and it was "likely nobody escaped."

They confirmed the crew of 4 on board didn't make it. 3 Air National Guardsman and 1 Loadmaster. Very sad

It crashed into the ground and blew up?
Seriously though Im curious as to what happened too. Maybe the jets ingested some type of fowl.

Could be anything that caused it to go down. Water in the fuel. Uncommanded flight control or even fuel transfer for high bank turn. I don't think we will know anything further for about another week

Id be surprised if the general public ever knew the actual cause of the accident.

The way the news reports make it sound it was on fire has it came down, so the bird theory sounds plausible, but they will know once the read the flight recorder.....

Back in 1996 almost in exactly the same spot (less than a mile to the northeast of that spot) an AWACS went down from ingesting canadian geese.
The C17 crew was doing flagpole flying in preparation for the airshow that they are having this weekend. Sometimes crews hot dog it a little much and that may be what happened too, who knows?

No, that is the third to crash but the first where it was a total loss of aircraft and crew.

I know exactly which incident you are referring to and that was terrible.

That's terrible to hear.
It's the first real crash, with deaths involved, that I know of.
Everything else has just been "incidences" that were repairable.
I was in Kandahar when a C-17 ran off the runway, followed by another catching on fire in front of the TLS. Then, a couple of months later, a Charleston crew did the now famous belly landing at Bagram (which gave us a nice 3-4 days break from action since their runway was closed for heavies). Pilot error all the way on that one. 2009 was a helluva year for mishaps.
Also saw a helo lose lift, right after take off, at about 100 ft in the air at KDH, and it came slamming down to the ground killing like 10 of the 15 contractors in a fire ball. The survivors lived only because they jumped out of it in the air. They probably won't walk again, but at least they didn't burn to death. Another chopper crashed right outside the base killing some more contractors.
Gravity doesn't fuck around.

That's sad news.
I flew on a Charleston C-17 on my way out here to Afghanistan.:bigthumb:
Back in 2006 in Iraq I was flying in a Huey when a damn Sea Gull smashed into the upper windshield. We weren't far from base, so we were able to make it back.

As said before thats the 3rd one to crash, the others didn't involve death though. There have also been some very close calls that didn't make the news. I was on one that missed the runway in Afghanistan, we landed short in the rocks and bounced onto the runway. Just because I was sitting up-front I had to fly back to Charleston and go through the whole safety re-view board.

When/where were these 2 other crashes (not belly landings or landing short/long)?

When/where were these 2 other crashes (not belly landings or landing short/long)?
Both at Bagram. Both were crashes.
1. Landing on closed runway and running off, shredding the belly and rib structure and sub spars apart
2. Gear up crash
The difference between a crash and a mishap/incident is cost (when death is not involved).
The FAA and NTSB dictate that, not personal opinion.
Would you consider the C5 that went into a stall and landed on its belly just short of the runway a mishap (Dover AFB) a couple years ago?
Oh man. I got a friend stationed up there. I gotta check in with him.

Then I guess the C-17 that ran off the end of the runway at Kandahar didn't cost as much to repair as the one in Bagram..
But anyway, I've strayed this too far. I hope that they don't find this crash as a result of a pilot hotdogging.

All of our second guessing aside my thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen, regardless of the investigation findings.

I haven't been into work since the incident. I did just get back from a mission flying on the c-17, and it was in the back of my head the entire time..
My friend said he was supposed to jump out of that plane later that day.
