View Full Version : auto or manual?

Im debating. Now that im slowly resigning my self to fix his old Monte SS, i dont know which way to go. All SS were auto, so staying auto would be the easiest route, and of course cheaper because duh i build them all day.
Going 6spd would require holes being cut and pedals being installed and a high dollar clutch....
6spd would be fun but auto would be more cost effective and easier. 6spd might require a better rear end, but with the auto i can probably get away with the 8.5 10 bolt with the proper hardware.
Decisions, decisions....

auto .... built tranny, trans brake proper stall... done.
my .5 cents:)
5/6 speeds are fun tho.

I dont like autos, so you know my vote :p 6spd is more fun.
Except my Camaro is gonna have an auto because of ''requirement'', sooo :hide:

You already have the t56, the clutch wont be that bad for your power level ~$550. If you go auto, which would be cool, then you would be looking at big money for your 4000 stall circle d converter (assuming 4l60e, which since this is gonna be a street cruiser I would assume you want OD). I'm assuming the car will have a cam, of course.

Street = Manual
Strip = Auto
If the mix of the two are equal, go auto. My $0.02 worth.

You will win more race's with an auto.....Cheaper than buying clutches!

Sorry Joe. Maybe i should clarify. I already have a converter, from my research it seems to be a pretty decent one. If need be i can have it rebuilt or modified for 200-300 bucks. I have the correct 4l60e cores to build. Parts wont be so bad for me because, well, you know the parts store and all.
With the six speed i still need to open it up and put bronze fork pads in it, 130 bucks, and a good clutch, id like to go ceramic not LS7, i know thats the one you quoted for price.
Either way i want to get a drive shaft made. So it comes down to ease of the project. The car is set up for auto. With the manual id need to put a hole in the fire wall and a hole in the floor board, then install pedals.
The car will probably be at the track every weekend.
Im leaning toward auto, might save the t56 for Taras car.

Keeping in mind I am a manual trans guy, I'd go with auto-if the car will be raced at the track. For street fun, it's hard to beat a stick car.

go auto. manuals are fun i guess , if you like to shift all the time and don't mind stop and go traffic. But nothing beats a nicely stalled auto on the street or track. And no clutches or flywheels to replace, no chances of missing gears , no chance of the shifter knob being hell hot when you need to drive.

Ive driven manuals all my life, all the cars i own that currently run are manual. I drove the dually for 2 or 3 weeks back and forth to work on I26. Stop and fucking go. Im not going to say i enjoyed it but it didnt bother me that bad. Hell i drove a solid week back and forth to work with the dually and the trailer, loaded and unloaded.
But it would be nice to get back into an auto car.

Auto, and my tranny guy can't keep vehicles off jackstands. So he not only builds tranny's for slow pos's he keeps them broken down too.

As much as I LOVE a manual, unless having a T56 will reach my goals, we could always sell it. I don't want a slow car. :) Or put it on there to start then swap it out when its time.

DONT GET A MANUAL IF YOU WANT TO GO FAST!!!
Hell i love my car and you know how Damon and I beat the hell out of it. It has already cracked 2 tailshaft housings, an output shaft, and put the car down twice
BTW every time i am in the lights I have to worry about rpms, clutch, lights, nitrous( I know that a two-step will help), shifts, rpm, rev limiter.
Again, I f-ing love my car, but if I can get a TH-400, it would be a ton more consistent and faster.
I am shooting for 9s and a T56, too much shit can go wrong!!!
Get an auto

Auto all the way.
TH-400 FTW
Take two identical cars one with an manual and one with a firm shifting stalled auto and the auto will win every time. No one can shift a manual as fast as an auto shifts.

Dont know if its just my work computer or not but that vid had no sound so it didnt prove shit to me.
I still stand by my previous statement though no matter how bad ass the driver is a manual will never shift as fast as a properly setup auto.

Its not the shifting that slows you down(excluding joe). Trying to get a good start off the line is what slows a manual down.
