View Full Version : educate me on TBSS....

I always say "a vehicle should do THREE things for you" for you to buy it.
a TBSS would:
-tote grandbabies
-be a fun car to dragrace. (more so than a Tahoe - what she wants)
- __________________ (fill in the blank)
we have one grandbaby, and another on the way.
the wife wants a SUV so she can haul two babies.
we have a diesel truck that we DD (work together....:fial:...)
the diesel gets 15~18 depending on how stop & go traffic is. If I can keep the cruise set I can see 18 consistently.
but deisel is $3.30, and gas is $2.80.
even so, there is really NOT much money to be saved by changing to gas, and going to a "more fuel efficient" vehicle.
we "only" use $200 worth of fuel a month, so you would have to get 40MPG to save half of that, a $100.
so, saving a $100 a month would require: tax, tags, insurance, wear & tear, maintenance, tires. the economics go downhill quick
we drive to NC mountains to see family pretty often. so road trips could show some improvement, the diesel does 19~20 if you run ~65mph STEADY, much faster, and the aero drag overcomes MPG. 75mpg puts you back 15~18mpg
if a TBSS had MDS (multi displacement) where it could rack up ~22mpg on the highway, you might feel smart making the payment
on to the TBSS questions:
1 Gas MPG of a TBSS, in town & highway:
a: 2wd town ____ highway ____
b: 2wd with basic mods (CAI, U/D pulleys, exhaust)
c: AWD town ____ highway ____
d: AWD with basic mods (CAI, U/D pulleys, exhaust)
2. benefits of 2wd vs AWD?
disadvantages?
likelihood to break AWD at Bowman?
looks like a nice TBSS can be had for ~$15k on the tbssforums, just be a waiting game for one close enough with low miles & right color (black!)

2wd are faster and get a little bit better mpg. My 2wd with 22's got 16mpg in the city.
3rd blank....the look on a rustang owners face after they got gapped by an suv...

A TBSS is the worst SUV to buy for fuel mileage. If your wanting something to save on fuel cost your looking at the wrong SUV.

FUEL mileage go Transverse, equinox and some other midsize suv for fuel mileage.
If you are looking at a TBSS you are looking at something with room , towing capabilities, and something that can be fun with some mods. If you do not care about towing than look at a G8 GT, or A cts-v.

1 Gas MPG of MY TBSS, in town & highway:
c: AWD town 14.5 highway 16.5
d: AWD with basic mods (CAI, U/D pulleys, exhaust) - Tell you next week.
Benefits of AWD....being able to take just about anything off the line......and absolutely awesome in the mountains.

Thats mixed driving
2wd is less prone to breaking your factory transmission
2wd will hook with good tires
factory DVD for the kidz and side curtain airbags
2wd 90 plus k miles Tune with cold air and random tech cats
It drives like a car and doesnt feel topheavy around curves

your MPG answers are crap-tac-ular.
Zac, do you know the gas pedal has intermediate positions? not just "launch" and "WOT" " :)
a CTS-V is pretty small inside, seats are supposa be tight. i don't see them ~ $15k either.
part of the SUV desire is driving in traffic, as a replacement DD.
we come over 526 and merge on to 26 sometimes, and it's scary 75% of the time. and our DD is fairly large, now.
i need a 5th vehicle like i need another hole in my noggin, but the wife keeps complaining...I doubt this will amount to much, just getting my facts together
edit: good note on the AWD breaking tranny's. almost ALL the forum listings mention tranny upgrades, like they are required for the tranny to survive
I emailed this chick, sarah, but no answer:

depending on the fuel used. if it has ethanol or not, i get between 13.5-15.0 average, up hill, down hill highway or city, the way i drive it, it never changes. awd kills mpg

Have you driven one? My Wife has a cts and I am not a small guy and honestly I love driving that car. Daughter rides in the back and plenty of room. They have more room in the back than many lexus car models, more room in the back than infiniti g35 (i believe that was the 4 door car) and a couple of other "big looking" 4 door cars.
And finding a v for 15k you aren't looking hard enough. shon herronjust finally sold his for a hair more than that. I wish I would have gotten the v. But honestly she gets 20+mpg, has 265hp (newer models have MORE) and honestly, I will say i believe my wifes 4 door v6 car can walk a black 02 gt at the track :bigthumb:

Another dang good car right there too. That was the other option for my wife, but couldn't find one on a car lot at the time

Prob not doing cooler this weekend. It is en route to the house, but I have to work this weekend, so quick fans and IEATSRT8 CAI and updated tuned ECM/TCM from Alvin yes.
Cooler the following weekend hopefully.
I put stock computers back in to have tune updated and realize how crappy these things run stock.....

I would be interested to see how well the new cherokee with the hemi would run with the TBSS. I bet it would be close.

I wasn't aware of this either...lol.
I'm getting around 14-16 mpg with CAI, e-fan, headers, dual exhaust, tune, and rolling on 22's.
