This is random, but I'm sure some of you can help.

I want to change insurance companies, because I found a much better rate with another company. I just today paid my latest payment, so what's the best way to switch? Do I wait until right before the next payment to do it, or will I still owe?

I don't want to be paying 2 companies for the same month of coverage if that makes any sense. Any advice would be great, thanks guys!

call your agent and tell them the situation

Kind of trying to avoid that at the moment, just want to see what the best way to do it is before I talk to some salesman from the company telling me whatever he can to try and get me to stay.

when I changed insurance the agent just made it effective at the end of the old policy. I just never made a payment to Allstate for their new policy and informed them I changed companies. They did ask who I switched to.

Switch to the new company and get a prorated refund from your old one.

Just call them. Anyway, in my experience it is cheaper getting quotes online. To be safe you could compare rates online, pick the best offer and try a local agency to see if they can match it or do better: http://www.quotes-center.com/auto-insurance-calculator

I would play it safe and switch right before the next payment is to be made to the auto insurance company. Maybe discuss this problem with your new company? TheyÔÇÖll be as helpful as they can; they want you to join them!
