View Full Version : To Sell the SRT-4 Or No?

Just wanted to see a few opinions on this. I'm getting married in December, and I want to get off on the right foot financially. I have a decent amount of credit card debt that I racked up when I was stupid, nothing crazy but enough to keep me making fairly large payments every month. I also have the SRT-4 that I make payments on, about 200 every month plus almost 150 for insurance.

If I sold the car and bought a beater that would free up at least 300 to pay down the credit cards. Problem is, I am addicted to boost, and I love this car. I also figure I should have a fun car while I'm young and don't have kids. I know I can still have a fun car later, I am just impatient lol. Most of you have seen the car, it's not fast but it's fun, it also would only take about another $1k to start hanging with some of you big boys.

I know what the right answer is, just wanted to hear some opinions I guess.

Guess you need to figure out what's more important to you a new marraige without as much financial burden, or bankruptcy and divorce. That whole "while I'm young" argument is weak and it's the same shit my wife used to say when she saw all of her friends going on trips and buying things. Now they are all still broke and in debt and she and I are the ones paying cash for things and not owing anyone.

You can accomplish alot of things when you are working for yourself and not the lender.

Very true, bankruptcy and divorce is not in the picture though, everything is getting paid down, just not as fast as I would like. I'm also not accruing any more debt, learned that lesson a while ago.

The while I'm young argument may be "weak" but it has at least some semblance of truth, I don't have kids or a mortgage, 2 things that will severely limit my fun time down the road.

Simplest answer.....Dont get married.

Thanks lol

Congrats on your upcoming marriage :cheers

Gosh, I was just pondering getting rid of my ride not too long ago tooalbeit not for the same reasons, but contemplating parting with a ride that one has put a lot of time, money, and love into is a hard decision, no matter what the reasons might be.

IÔÇÖm 42 with 2 kids and just bought my del Sol to restore 7 months ago, which goes to show that youÔÇÖre NEVER too old to have a fun car. IÔÇÖve had the TBSS since April 2007 and she is has been a work in progress ever since. But up until I got the truck, I had nothing that was ever hooked up. However, I did get an awesome house. So, the rides were worth the wait IMO.

I think selling the SRT-4 and paying off your debt would be a wise decision. It will be hard, but youÔÇÖll just have to think of life beyond the SRT-4. I sold my Integra GSR, which was an awesome car, so I could get the engine swap for the Sol and was bummed when the dude came to buy it. As I was standing there watching some stranger drive off in my beautiful little Teggy and the tears started to well up, I thought about how awesome that new engine was going to be in the oversized go-cart that I bought. No tears after that.

You can get bigger boost later :bigthumb:

Get out of debt. Especially if you can turn a dollar on the SRT-4. It seems like your fiance already enjoys cars, so it shouldn't be a big deal to find something better down the road.

I think Chris had the best answer! It not too late to run till you sign the papers!!! Ha ha

Really though thats a tough decision no doubt. Unless the car has real sentimental value I would say to sell it and get something without payments that you can get cheaper coverage on.

I am a huge fan of the Neon SRT-4 but at the end of the day... It still is just a car.

Just sell the srt4. They aren't that hard to find so you can always get another one down the road. Debt free is the way to go! Thats why I sold the GTO. I only owed $5k on a $14k car. I paid off all my debts and will have a paid for 6 second car soon....

Thanks for the input guys, I think I will go ahead and sell it. Sucks because it's a great little car. But I know I'll be better off in the long run, I'll be able to buy something faster later on :)

This will be my last foray into FWD cars I think. I've owned 3 different FWD turbo 4 Cyl cars now. Next will be AWD.

It is cheap but I also don't make very much money so it kind of evens out.

No offense here. I would probably start asking for 10k obo. KBB in good condition (I personally would consider the car in good to excellent condition) is $10,500, excellent is $11,500. Plus it has a lot of goodies (yes I'm aware that doesn't necessarily add to the value of the car), and I've put over $600.00 worth of stuff into it since I bought it.

i have had paid for cars that cost me more to keep up than if i just made a 200 dollar payment. you can get a forcast and figure out how much a month is takes to pay off your debt in say 2 years or 3 years. i would be willing to bet when you buy another car you are going to have to work on it some and add that to the cost to buy it what did you end up saving. you know what you have now and seems like you like the car so you know what you will have. just be responsible like you are now with debt and i will clear up. you didn't get into debt overnight so it takes a little time to get out. my 2 cents

Good points all, but I find it hard to believe that any beater I get will end up costing more than $300 every single month to keep running. Besides, I have the ability to repair any minor issues that will pop up. I say beater but there are plenty of good cars out there for cheap that are reliable. If I keep paying down my debt at the current rate that I am now, it will take me a looooong time to pay it off, where as if I sell the car it will happen much quicker. On the other hand, I'm picking up a part time job on the side which should help speed things up a little bit as well, which would make it easier to pay everything off.

The fact of the matter is I want an Evo lol. The quickest way for that to happen is to pay off all of my debt asap. I also want to buy a house in the next year and a half or so, now is the time to do it too, before prices to start to go back up. IF they go back up that is.

Not trying to brag but I have four cars, a 1999 Maxima, 1998 camaro, 1997 S10, and a 1971 Nova. The best thing about all of them is I don't make a payment. If you can get past the not giving a fuck about what people see you driving then you're good. I hate payments in general, so I figure that if I only have a house payment I'm doing good. Get out of debt as fast as possible and don't look back. I went w/ the Dave Ramsey approach myself. As mentioned earlier (minus the house) if I can't pay cash for it I don't need it! I'm sure there are a few folks, even on this website that finance their hobby, which to me is the most asinine thing in the World. If you have a kick ass wife like me she'll let you buy all the toys you want as long as you don't swipe a credit card to do it.

half & half.

i have sold all my decent (payment) vehicles, then had my "i saved a bunch" vehicles die on me.

what I try to do now, is have one newer vehicle,
and one older vehicle, and maintain both of them in top notch condition.

i would look between yours & her vehicle, and keep the best one, let her drive it.
my wife & kids always rolled in the new stuff, and i had skrate up JUNK.

i know where a $500 pickup is now, been thinking about dumping my big truck, and losing the insurance, and letting that old $500 roach be the backup to my wifes newer vehicle.

it costs $300 just to SWAP cars, because you have to pay tax.
so if you lose $1000 on the neon, and pay $300 tax, and the $600 you just put into the skittle,
and you buy a beater for $2000...and then it needs $500 work...

you got a bunch a money in something..you can't drive reliably

a man with a job, needs to keep his job, and he needs dependable transportation to do that.
a man working for a living, don't want to wrench on all his off time.

pray about it. some guys on here do, some don't, but that's the deal. if you pray about it, you will wake up with the right answer.
and if you & her don't agree...it ain't the right answer.

Very good points. And yes I am praying about it, it's important. The one thing I forgot to mention is that the other big problem is that the mod bug always bites me with cars like these, and it doesn't go away. If I keep it, I'll want to keep modifying it.

My fiancee's car is ok, has little problems every once in a while that I can handle, but it's not worth anything. We just want to do everything possible to get out of debt. Short term it might cost me a little bit of money but long term it will work out better I think.

Thats debatable. Ive seen people with 500 dollar a month car payments on an 08 model that needed a 2k transmission. Perfect example, I just finished an 06 colorado. The truck is beat to hell, makes terrible noises, the front drivers tire wobbles, the interior is trashed, when you hit the brake the blinkers come on, already had a motor replaced, missfires on all cylinders and he paid me to put a transmission in it. Looking at this truck, its a beater, 168k, but he just finished paying it off.....

Ive seen cars that have been driven for 20 years, with only regular maintenance.

My car is a 92, its pretty much 20 years old. In the last four years the only major repairs ive done were the timing belt and clutch. My car has 280k. Its a beater, up until last year we drove this car up and down the east coast with out issue.

ANY car is going to need to be worked on. Buy a cheap older car, parts are less expensive, repairs cost less, insurance is cheaper. If something happens to it, no big deal.

Sorry, I just cant see your point.

It's a simple point really. My sister's POS beater Eclipse GT got 1000's a year in mechanic work. It drained her for years on end. It's no secret when after so many years a car starts to fall apart. If he spent 5 grand instead of 250 bucks....he just might be better off for a longer period of time. Lets also take into account the hassle of it all.

The new Mustang is under 200 a month with no money down and no trade in? Sorry but they are just not that cheap and that is part of the equation.

I think he was trying to do the math in his head when your wife said that she has that low of a payment on the mustang, I think he just assumed that it was leased in order to get that low payment, I'm sure he didn't know that you only financed 10k.

Just for the record, the 3rd Gen Eclipses are terrible cars, everybody I know with one has pretty much constant problems. Like I said before, I bought a $700 civic a few years back and drove it every day for over a year with literally zero issues, so I'm not too worried about it.

I didn't assume she leased it but I said the same thing to him as he said a few post to me. If ya financed 10 it's because you either put money down or had a hell of a trade in. Both which would or should have counted towards the equation in the first place. So 200 a month isn't beater range if you put a shit load of money down in the first place and it's a new car.

It's not hard, all I said and have been saying is, and if it makes you feel better "IMO" it's better to spend say 1000 cash on a more reliable car than say 250 on one that might have the tranny go out tomorrow. You get what you pay for. Standing by to continue this feeble squable over opinion:?
