Well honestly to out run bad bob he would have to change his whole setup. Might as well buy another $500 notch 4cylinder roller and start fresh. Lightnings are nice trucks but they lack on the room. Shawn usually has the wife and kids with him so the tbss is much better for him.

I don't know that you know me well enough to make that statement. I have the patience, what I don't have is the disposable income to make it happen right now. Especially trying to build a Lightning at the same time. Now I'll only have one thing to concentrate on.

As far as me being nuts for trading both I disagree. The truck is barely worth 10 thousand and the car might bring 5k. The Trailblazer is 16-17000 dollar truck all day long.

I wasn't speaking towards the monetary part of the deal. I thought the Lightning was a daily vehicle, not a race truck.

I agree, you misunderstood my use of "potential" statement. You have a "331 in the oven" and I was looking forward to seeing what you could finish doing with the car. There was no hostility meant by my statement. I just met you earlier this year, and you've been through how many vehicles?

Um yeah. No. From what I'm reading there is no such thing as a "built" 4L65E. Apparently its a ticking time bomb at any power level over stock in this application and the only REAL fix is a 4L80E swap. Thats probably the direction I'm gonna go.

That TBSS has had a history of external electrical issues regarding transmission controls. Intermittently, out of the blue, the PRNDL status in the instrument cluster will fly from Drive to Park while you are still rolling down the road. The body control module runs the instrument cluster and it is cycling the door locks when it acts up. When it acts up, the TCM goes into limp mode because it is still reading a road speed and seeing a Park, Reverse, or whatever signal from the manual switch circuit. Limp mode isn't so bad by itself, but when the trans is manual shifted while in limp mode, damage gets done to various friction elements inside. GM didn't think thoroughly enough when designing this trans to avoid gear conflict issues when manual shifting in limp mode. When everything is working right, a built 4L70E that comes in these trucks can handle most anything you can throw at it on pump gas.

Supposedly, the external gear status switch has been changed out along with a donor TCM and the problem still persists. About the only thing left to consider is a bad ground or harness issue. The trouble is, it is so damn intermittent it's hard to put a solid finger on the culprit.

At this point, swapping to a 4L80E is going to give you issues, too, if the external electrical problem isn't fixed. The 4L80E adapter harness for the Trailblazer is only about 6 inches long, so all of the existing harness on the truck will be passing all the signals for a 4L80E, too. Once the issue with the PRNDL indicator circuit gets found and fixed, the original 4L70E that comes with the truck will survive everything you can throw at it with pump gas up to around 600hp or even a little more.

Yeah I know they had issues but I think they got em sorted out. There are a bunch of 4L80E swapped TBSS's running around. Oh and thats Gerald with a CAPITAL G LMAO!

The swap kit that Neal got ended up having a misprogrammed TCM in the kit. It was shifting all the way up to 4th gear just rolling up to 10mph in the yard.

What I believe happened with the original TCM from the swap kit is the pulses per revolution parameter for the input shaft speed sensor wasn't changed to work with the 4L80E. The 4L70E uses less than about 20 teeth per revolution, while the 4L80E uses a whole lot more. If the TCM thinks the input shaft is spinning very fast via a high rate of pulses from the input shaft speed sensor, it will upshift the trans very early. A correctly programmed TCM from the swap kit manufacturer solved the early shift issue.

In a GTO. Strap another 1000 pounds and AWD to it and the tranny is being taxed to its limit. Dont take my word for it go to tbssowners.com and look around. Every other thread is "help my tranny died today".

true. oh, buy the way he running 1100 rwhp on the trans in a 4,000 pound car.

It's got all the hard parts stuff to handle 600hp in it. It's just that manual shifting in limp mode and who knows what TCM substitutions for diagnostic purposes have been done to it so far have done the frictions and 2-4 band in. Parts-wise, it shouldn't cost near as much as when it was originally built since we are hopefully just expecting soft parts damage at this point. The drum the 2-4 band rides on is hopefully the only hard part that may need replacing ($100). After going for a ride with Paul the other week, I'm pretty sure the rivets of the band have already dug into the drum by now.

Something to think about between the 4L70E and the 4L80E is the first gear ratio. That heavy TBSS may be just right with the 3.06 first gear ratio of the 4l70e vs. the 2.48 first gear of the 4L80E.

4l60e ------------- 4l80e

1st-3.059:1 --------- 2.482:1
2nd-1.625:1--------- 1.482:1
3rd-1.000:1 --------- 1.000:1
4th-0.696:1 --------- 0.750:1

On the other hand, if you have wheelie problems launching your TBSS, the 4L80E first gear will help tone that little nuisance down. :hysterical:

I would comfortably rate a built 4L65E/4L70E with a good transmission tune to 600hp and on an experimental basis to 700-750hp. This is about all the factory yoke size on the driveshaft is going to handle if you can stick that much power out the hole. I have been keeping close tabs on one of my 4L65E experiments that I feel pretty sure has a conservative 400hp on motor with a 300 shot of naws right out the gate. It's been going strong for about a year now and is still taking a regular beating. [fingers crossed]

If you got the nads to go higher in power than that, the 4L80E is definitely the way to go. You get a much bigger slip yoke on the 4L80E. Realistically, the extra weight of a 4L80E doesn't really matter at the 700hp+ mark. You got's power to burn at that level! :hail:

our 4L60e is handling every bit of our 336 rwhp just fine in the 3980# pig. ;)

Well, ventured out to Summerville today and talked to the previous owner for an hour or so about the truck. He was very helpful and pretty much gave me a rundown on everything thats been done to the truck thus far. I also talked to Gerald on the phone for a lil bit and he gave me some ideas as well. Time to dig in here and find out whats going on with this thing. I also confirmed today that the battery in the truck is toast which cant be helping the complicated electronics on this thing at all. So, a new battery is the first order of business and I'll go from there. Wish ole Shawnboy some luck.

Got the new battery installed but the problem was still there. As you know from my question on tbssowners the truck would not crank in neutral as it should. Got under it this morning and tried to adjust the switch but could not get it adjusted right. There is wear (or its cracked) where the switch slides over the shaft. Gonna pick up a new one from Rob today. Gerald and I both think that the switch could possibly be the root of my problem.

I don't know. I was thinking about the extra slippage hurting mileage worse than it already is, and also really wanna go boasted eventually and I don't know that might be too much stall? I was also concerned with the converter being contaminated from the tranny failure.

Zac said something about using the six cylinder converter behind the 6.0. Said it would stall higher than than the stock SS converter and its cheap. Again nothing in stone right now. Need to do more research!

PapaBear
09-10-2011, 09:52 AM
Yes, the I6 converter is a little higher.

As far as mileage, I really didn't lose that much, maybe .5 MPG or something low like that. 3200 definately not too much stall, depending on where you're going with the truck. I don't plan to build a race truck with mine, and still need to tow a boat every now and then, so I went 3200. Some of these guys are running 3600 and 4000 RPM stall converters, but mainly on track trucks.

Hate to say it, but if you are worried about mileage, you got the wrong vehicle.

For the tranny failure and converter contamination, as far as I know, a good tranny flush will clean the converter as well. Or you could send it off for a "freshening up."

I'll let u know if I still have my stock one, might have went with the last scrap run.

ShawnBoyMoody
09-10-2011, 10:07 AM
True on the mileage thing. I think Shawn said this was originally a 3800 stall converter that he sent to Cameron to be restalled to 3200. I just hate all these "unknowns". I dont have a problem using it if its okay.

Oddly enough the repeatability of the problem was almost cut in half after changing that switch. It would cycle every 5 minutes before now it might do it once on a 25 mile trip. It's still there though. I replaced the electrical part of the ign switch last night on a long shot. No change there either but good insurance anyway as they are a problem on these trucks anyway. I'll be ordering pcmforless.coms battery cable upgrade with extra grounds in the next couple of days. After that I'm gonna burn the bitch.
