JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - A Johns Island man was arrested Friday afternoon after deputies say he attacked a repo man with his fists and a fire extinguisher.

Charleston County sheriff's deputies arrested 56-year-old Robert Terry Newman and charged him with second degree assault and battery and malicious injury to property.

The victim, 23-year-old Joshua Myers, said he went to the Mullet Hall Equestrian Center to repossess Newman's truck when Newman allegedly attacked him.

"Next thing I know, he was inside the truck with me just wailing on my face," Myers said. "I had no chance."

Myers said the suspect also ripped a fire extinguisher off the side of his repo truck and sprayed him with it.

The repo man said he called 911 and finally got Newman to calm down.

Dispatcher: "Were weapons involved or mentioned?"

Myers: "Yes. He's got a blunt object."

Dispatcher: "What kind of object? Do you know what it is?"

Myers: "Ma'm I'm about to die. You've got to get cops."

Dispatcher: "Josh, I need to know what it is. Do you know what it is?"

Myers: "It's a tire iron."

Myers: "I'm probably going to need an ambulance. I think something is broken on my face."

Myers said the suspect made one last attempt to keep his vehicle.

"Showed me a check in his back pocket where he had the money to make the payment and at that point, you're going to jail. I really don't care if you got the money to pay it up," Myers said.

Myers suffered a concussion and an eye injury.

Newman is free on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond which means he did not have to pay any money to get out of jail.

Deputies say Newman was hiding the truck at his job. He is a maintenance man with the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission.

The agency's human resource director says she could not give out his employment status after the arrest because it is a personnel matter.

A background check shows Newman was convicted of assault and battery with intent to kill in 1989. He was given five years probation and ordered to pay restitution to his victim.

He must be new to repo, otherwise he wouldnt be suprised by this at all. People are desperate to keep what they have and will do just about anything to make sure you dont take it. Messed up no matter how you look at it, pay your damn bills or dont buy something you cant afford...

I guess that young fella never heard the saying....

"Don't mess with an old man - he'll just kill you!" :gramps2:

or

"Beware the man with just one gun. He probably knows how to use it!"

or

"When seconds count, the cops are just a half hour away!"

When I was helping with a friends towing company a few years ago, my my wife asked why I wouldn't do any of the repo's and this was why. If the reward was bigger I would do it, but just helping a friend for a for a few bucks on each tow. Fuck that it ain't worth it. Granted, he made good money on the ones he did but that didn't pass down to me!

i am wondering if the tow company guy was just some young kid, trying to feed his wife & kids.

if this was on County Property, and the guy sues the County too,
the idiot could lose his county retirement for LIFE. that would teach him good, lose $750 a month for the rest of his life over a $1500 truck.

always more to the story than what is in papers.
