JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - A Johns Island man was arrested Friday afternoon after deputies say he attacked a repo man with his fists and a fire extinguisher.
Charleston County sheriff's deputies arrested 56-year-old Robert Terry Newman and charged him with second degree assault and battery and malicious injury to property.
The victim, 23-year-old Joshua Myers, said he went to the Mullet Hall Equestrian Center to repossess Newman's truck when Newman allegedly attacked him.
"Next thing I know, he was inside the truck with me just wailing on my face," Myers said. "I had no chance."
Myers said the suspect also ripped a fire extinguisher off the side of his repo truck and sprayed him with it.
The repo man said he called 911 and finally got Newman to calm down.
Dispatcher: "Were weapons involved or mentioned?"
Myers: "Yes. He's got a blunt object."
Dispatcher: "What kind of object? Do you know what it is?"
Myers: "Ma'm I'm about to die. You've got to get cops."
Dispatcher: "Josh, I need to know what it is. Do you know what it is?"
Myers: "It's a tire iron."
Myers: "I'm probably going to need an ambulance. I think something is broken on my face."
Myers said the suspect made one last attempt to keep his vehicle.
"Showed me a check in his back pocket where he had the money to make the payment and at that point, you're going to jail. I really don't care if you got the money to pay it up," Myers said.
Myers suffered a concussion and an eye injury.
Newman is free on a $2,500 personal recognizance bond which means he did not have to pay any money to get out of jail.
Deputies say Newman was hiding the truck at his job. He is a maintenance man with the Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission.
The agency's human resource director says she could not give out his employment status after the arrest because it is a personnel matter.
A background check shows Newman was convicted of assault and battery with intent to kill in 1989. He was given five years probation and ordered to pay restitution to his victim.
