Rotts were bred to herd sheep and livestock to market or pull a cart with a butcher's meat to market. The butcher's would tie sacks of coins around the dogs neck to keep it safe from robbers when traveling.

ive been bitten by a golden retriever and also a yellow lab. Yellow lab was after it broke its leash while jumping towards me to try to attach. it ran me down and bit me in the stomach until my dog came and attached it.

GSD's are smart... well most of them anyway, lol. Rott's are smart too.

On the other hand, I always hear about Dobermans and Pits ripping someones (often the owner or their kids) face off or the like, because they are too dumb to know their own strength. This info is not from the media, but from people that own them.
