Internet Out?
Our internet at work went out early yesterday afternoon, at&t. Came in this morning and its still out. Apparently some other businesses are out too. Anybody else? I'm so screwed, my workload is increasing exponentially the longer its out.
|
Not out at Boeing.....but when it does go out, they send us all home. I remember the railroad hit a line one day at like 7:30 in the morning. Once Boeing found out it would be all day before it was fixed.....we were outta here at 9AM, PAID!!
Wish it happened more often lol. |
nope

I pay verizon a bunch of money every month and my internet barely ever works if that counts.
|
Had internet all day at the house. Even had it on the ps3.

You must not work for a big company......
Most companies that actually have an IT budget.....have redundant systems. At work we have 3 internet providers. Verzion for FTTC (fiber). AT&T DSL, and some no name brand dsl provider. We use the fiber as a primary. 4 t1's load balanced. If you actually have an IT dept its always something to bring up to them. Now, our offsite warehouses have single internet backbones. But main plant has backups for backups :P |

I really want to look for something more local. 45min commute is killing my wallet..... |
IT is at corporate up in NYC, and they are pretty much incompetent.

One of our locators put a pic up of a huge fiber cut in town somewhere. Maybe that was it. I don't fix fiber but when we fixed a big cable for boeing, they brought us bags of hats and shit for getting it going. High rollers fosho

Fiber optic cable work in the field is not too bad. I wish I had that job. It's better than mine....

Boeing gives you the day off if you dont have interwebz? My company wont even give us the day off if the power goes out.

I have had to work all night on several occasions fixing 2100 cables that have been cut. I remember one that was cut on 17 a few days before July 4th in '03 or '04 and it took 15 guys all night to fix. I was coming into the office with my truck and backhoe and happen to drive by as they were needing a tractor to dig up the cut cable. Needless to say I got stopped by my buddies and had to help out. I worked 24 hrs straight that time. I had to wait for a fresh person to drive the truck and tractor home after I had worked over the 15hrs. allowed to be able to drive the big truck in to the plant. A 2100 cable is 5" in diameter and weighs a lot. What a 2100 pair looks like opened up in a pedestal http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...1342126782.jpg Buddy of mine working on a 600 pair with a few tie cables in a pedestal http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...1342127091.jpg |
We had 2 cut 1800 pulp cables on rivers ave. Took us a week of 24 hrs straight crews working. Had to tone every pair. It's easy to rack up a $20,000 bill cutting a big fiber like that.
|
Fortunately mine ended up being a dead line because I was lazy and forgot to take before pics to show it wasn't marked.

Our company sends bills out often. It depends on how big the cable is and how much outage we have but I have seen bills in excess of $100,000. They usually charge $.25 per scotchlock that is used. |

Its easy work, but tedious as shit.... The company I work for is going to pay for all 3 fiber certs for me. Then working on my CCNA.....should be nice to accent my resume with. |

So very much hate for scotch locks......dear sweet little baby jesus |

Now for contractors you are in a completely different category. I have seen contractors get fired for things that you wouldn't even get a verbal reprimand for as a blue badge. I know this isn't something comforting to you, but it is what it is. I do think from your side that is probably the situation. On a side note I know of two people that got fired as contractors and still work there today. One of the guys got hired back as a blue badge after getting fired as a contractor TWICE before and the other the works for the same contract company he has been fired from once before. |

From what I was told a computer scans the applications. Without certain key words you wont ever hear a thing. Redo your application with these key words: Ohio, back home, up north, moved, transplant, michigan, cold weather, rude, carpet baggers......also mention something about how well you drive on snow and ice. You'll get a call immediately.

Funny thing is I know the key words and they are all up in my resume. I've applied for over 30 jobs there and never heard a peep back. |
