Important oil information for anyone.

Just putting this out there.

Backround a few years back the gov. made the oil manufactures cut down on the concentration of zinc in the oils today.

End result, over the past few years several things have started coming more frequent

There have been a rash of turbo failures across the board.
If you run a old school motor that's flat tappet you are now on borrowed time.

In the LS community:

LS7's are dropping exhaust valves due to valve guide failures.
Cam bearing failures have increased.
Lifter failures failures have increased.
Cam failures are up due to the above.
ect.

Please read below, it was written for the 4G63 crowd but most of the information is relevant to everyone on the site. It also lists comparisons of several different oils.

http://store.forcedperformance.net/m...otor%20Oil.pdf

What kind of failures do you guys know of that can be linked to oil among the other brands? What oil do you run and how has it worked for you.

Good info man. I posted that same stuff up on performancetrucks.net about a year ago.

FP has their shit together and those guys can build a mean turbo.

I run redline and Lucas. Vr-1 in a pinch, but swap all of them every 1500-2000 miles.

I run schaeffers in my stuff and it works awesome, and it is very reasonably priced

I've had multiple lash adjuster (lifters in pushrod motors) fail in my old Cobra.

AverageJoe 10-25-2012 06:51 AM

I started using rp hps for that reason

I have a flat tappet cam in my Blazer that I think is ruined due to this. I started running ZR-1 after researching this problem but I think the damage was already done. A roller retrofit will probably go back in.

Same, 20W50 High Zinc race oil

That FP article has been around a while, good peeps over there. I've been running Mobil 1 for a while and never had any problems, but I think I'm going to switch to Brad Penn here for the next oil change. Goofy part is I have to run the big ass 5.0 Mustang oil filter on the SRT-4 lol.

look at VR-1 again, they dropped all their good additives a few years ago, its just as worthless as regular Mobil1 now.

I cant remember which one it is but Mobil1 Extended Performance or the 15,000 mile stuff has high Zinc and whatever the other one was.

BIRDMAN 10-25-2012 11:01 AM

I've been using Rotella T-6.

If I could get German Castrol here in Germany, I would (irony). It's only sold in Autozones, sold as a a 0W-30 (but is a heavy 30 grade), and doesn't conform to the gay SM industry standard. Damn good oil for non-racecarz and has been a benchmark for synthetic oils for years.

Make sure it has a red label and Made in Germany on the back (I think the regular garbage syntec/edge is exported from brazil).

For now, I run Mobil-1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel oil. I'll definitely run GC again when I get back to the States.

Pesce Nero 10-25-2012 11:45 AM

Rotella 15-40

98z-28camaro 10-25-2012 11:49 AM

bwelch 10-25-2012 12:27 PM

They sell zinc addative in a yellow bottle at all the part stores.

BIRDMAN 10-25-2012 12:37 PM

Too much work.

bwelch 10-25-2012 12:53 PM

Yeah pouring a bottle of additive in your motor while your already under the hood adding oil is alot of work... Not to mention grabbing the bottle of additive off the shelf at the part store while your already walking by it to get your oil and filter...

BIRDMAN 10-25-2012 12:54 PM

Lol I forgot the sarcasm tag.

79bluebird 10-25-2012 01:52 PM

I use schaeffers surpreme 7000 20w/50 with extra zinc.

toslow 10-25-2012 07:40 PM

Brad Penn. All day
