few turbo questions

I got this turbo for free. I work at kenworth and when stuff in the parts department sits on the shelf for to long they throw it away. Another mecanic found out they thew out some stuff and he asked me if I would help him load it in his truck. he got in the dumpster and was handing it out to me. I jokingly told him if we found a turbo that I wanted it. well the next box he picked up was a turbo. Brand new still in the box. Its for a detroit 60 series. I did some checking on it and I think its a 76mm. It has a built in waste gate. I wanted to post some pics but I cant get photo bucket to show me my pics right now. I dont know crap about turbos. I change them at work all the time, but as far as putting one on a car, no. How much power can I make with this thing if it is a 76mm? And what kind of limits would I have with it? Would love to be able to use it on my brothers chevelle but from what I have seen its not
big enough to work with his engine.

Need the serial number off of it and manufacturer to tell you more. Also need to know what you plan on putting it on to see if its even a worthy project.

wade w 12-21-2012 09:38 PM

I've never heard of the maufactor its INTERSTATE-McBEE. The part number is 23528065M. The serial number is 15804.

wade w 12-21-2012 09:46 PM

Not sure what I'm going to do with it. I have a s10 that I have been putting together very slowly. It has a 350 with some vortec heads. It makes around 350hp. Maybe.

Bradleyrj 12-21-2012 09:56 PM

I'll keep looking but what I found so far is its a 500hp turbo from a 12.7L Detroit 60 Series.. BUT thats about ALL I found.

WTFWSAT 12-21-2012 10:01 PM

I crossed some numbers and i came up with a Gta4294 non bb....good for 500-1000hp. What exhaust housing is on it?

wade w 12-21-2012 10:02 PM

Ya That's what I found. Have you ever heard of that manufactor before?

wade w 12-21-2012 10:03 PM

What do you mean by what exhaust housing? And what does non BB mean?

red99pony 12-21-2012 10:32 PM

i have read before where people use diesel turbos to cut cost and get decent numbers. i drive truck and have seen diesels get 40 to 50 psi of boost many times so i would think with some welding and fab work it would work fine on the right engine.

Most of the dd series 60 run 16.5:1 compression. But it should work and it might be a t-6 or larger flange

Lol. Ya I have no idea what that means. What's a t-6?

Bradleyrj 12-21-2012 11:12 PM

T-6 is the size of the flange. Take a pic of where the exhaust enters the turbo with a tape measure and we can tell you if its T-4 or T-6 or larger. Any more pics would help. BB typically means Ball Bearing in the turbo world. BB are better than standard roller bearing style turbos.

Look on it and see if it has an A/R number on it. And how large is the exhaust outlet.

I don't know what happen to my photo bucket acount. I can't get it to load. I'm going to try and onpen another acount. It takes a 5inch exhaust pipe. Most big trucks do. It doesn't have any more info on it.

Just trying this to see if it works.

OK I know it works now. I have to charge up my phone to take some more pics. lol. Dont have a camera.

94zson 12-22-2012 12:42 AM

If you can bring it to my work or link up with me, we can get more details on it.

WTFWSAT 12-22-2012 12:04 PM

Looks pretty similar to a Garrett turbo, thats a twin scroll t6 exhaust flange. I would dump that exhaust housing considering the built in wastegate. Take some mm measurements of the turbine and call reed turbo works or some other company and see about a different ar housing.

ShawnBoyMoody 12-22-2012 12:43 PM

Its not any good for anything. Let me scrap it for you.

wade w 12-22-2012 10:39 PM

Whats wrong with the built in waste gate? Hell I was going to use it. If the waste gate is a bad idea. Could I not just not use it and leave it there? And Shawn boy. ummmmmm no. Ive been thinking about a LS engine. If I did I would want a 4.8. Oh yea. I opened a flickr acount to post the pictures because my photo bucket acount was acting retarded. I tired to post them to 3 other sites. this was the only one that would do it. Yall are special. hahaha.

You won't be able to hold boost levels consistently with that WG, an external WG will suit your needs better.

OK. I can understand that. Will it be fine if I disconnect the hose going to it? Id like to take it off altogether if Im not going to use it, but Im a cheap ass. If its not going to hurt anything. I will leave it there.
