LS motor oil

What do you all run in your newer LS motors? I just looked up the oil capacity for the LS3 in my car and its damn near 9qts and still a freaking wet sump... I believe they suggest mobil1 but is there anything else people prefer?

1998ta__1991rs 01-21-2013 03:23 PM

i ran vr1 in mine, the dealer will put whatever is in the reel in it, mobil should be fine

djfury05 01-21-2013 03:41 PM

Valvoline VR1 20w50

slowgreen99 01-21-2013 03:47 PM

pennzoil

BAD BOB 01-21-2013 03:52 PM

not sure if i would put 20w50 in a newer motor. I would say mobil or mobil 1

BigdaddyDupree 01-21-2013 04:06 PM

We put mobil1 in all v8 camaros, corvettes and cadillacs

RoadconeTuning 01-21-2013 04:34 PM

its deff not getting 20w50 considering it has less than 16k miles on it...

blkscls1z 01-21-2013 05:05 PM

Royal purple is my first choice, but if you are on a budget Mobil 1 would be my next choice. That's what I run in all my LS equipped vehicles.

DIGGLER 01-21-2013 06:20 PM

would need some loose tolerances for 20w50..... i would just run a synthetic 10w30ish.

jmd 01-21-2013 07:16 PM

10-30 mobile like it says in the book.

BigdaddyDupree 01-21-2013 07:32 PM

5w30 conventional cheapo

Carlrx7 01-21-2013 07:57 PM

I also asked this question and it wasn't worth the trouble or expense to vary from the OTC Mobil 1 5w-30. I tried RP XPR and at 15$ a quart it wasn't worth it, i could rebuild a new engine every 10,000 miles for the price of those oil changes... watch for autozone to have their 5qts and filter for 30 bucks.

MObile 1 5w30.....yeah it sucks changing oil in my G8, cost damn near as much as my duramax. 8.8qts gets expensive real quick!

AverageJoe 01-22-2013 12:05 AM

WTF!?

9 QUARTS!!!

Red99T/A 01-22-2013 01:07 AM

Walmart almost always has killer prices on Mobil 1.

Miker 01-22-2013 01:23 AM

I run Mobil1 0w-40 German Blend. It has 3x as much zinc as 5w-30. I don't have an oil cooler so I need it to retain oil pressure at high temps.

I also run an improved racing oil baffle and over fill by 1quart.

Slowfourdoor 01-22-2013 02:39 AM

yup. 8.8 quarts of royal purple then a K&N filter makes a g8 oil change close to 110 bucks

Yep it has DOD lifters, G8 with L76 takes 9 and LS3 in my CTS-V takes 7, kinda of backwards if you ask me.

i wish an i had LS mota to worry about what oil to put in it :boohoo:

RoadconeTuning 01-22-2013 09:13 AM

mines got an LS3 too... no DOD here but still has a swimming pool for an oil pan apparently.

I've always read good things about the german blends. where can you even get that stuff?

Autozone

spdracr0 01-22-2013 09:59 AM

I think most people run Holy water in their LS motors. They are the chosen ones you know!

RoadconeTuning 01-22-2013 10:08 AM

shit, i guess i better swing by the church on the way home and let dude man know he'd better get to blessing...

GreebeanZ28 01-22-2013 12:41 PM

I ran mobil 1 in my gto and the shit looked new when it came out, save for the cracked piston.

^^ This, if you can find enough of it! Oil analysis' have proven it better than standard Synthetic Mobil1.

RoadconeTuning 01-22-2013 06:10 PM

Is Autozone the only place that has it for sale?

bgstew6 01-22-2013 06:19 PM

Pep boys might carry it....

yes, 0w-40 m1 is good if you can find it in the big jug. i prefer that to the 5w-30 on my turbo vette

WILLIAMJRDN 01-22-2013 07:52 PM

I run 10w 30 Mobil 1 with 2 wix 1515 filters. but my oil cap is now 15qt.

hodge9386 01-22-2013 08:56 PM

vr1 10w30 here. runs like a champ

honestly, this works just as good. i would rather do that than spend $100 on an oil change. and the engine doesnt really care anyway most of the time. everyone has their own theories and gut feelings on oil though.

hodge9386 01-23-2013 11:24 AM

vr1 10w30 is 5.99 a qt. pretty cheap for some bad ass oil.

RoadconeTuning 01-23-2013 11:45 AM

Autzone no longer carries is, O'Rieleys doesnt either. Advance had the 0w40 European Formula but it didnt say made in Germany, it said made in Bolivia. it was also 8.99 an effin qt... I'm going to end up just running normal mobil1 since it'll be 50-60 instead of 100 to do an oil change.
