Started on my truck.

I got the supercharger and the intercooler off. Looking like the motor has got come out. How do you guys go about it. What do you atatch what to. Any info at all whould be great. thanks.

Mike 04-23-2008 11:29 PM

Go ahead and get the top(lower intake) & front end(ac, ps, wp, lower pulley, harmonic balancer etc....) out of the way. Pull the exhaust manifolds, radiator, and the starter. disconnect trans, converter, wiring harness, motor mounts, and yank it out. It's a tight fit between ac condenser and firewall

I probably forgot something, but you'll see it.

wade w 04-24-2008 12:37 AM

Thanks Mike. There was one thing that looked kind of funny. From what Ive read before. I thought the cooler would be clogged with oil. There was no oil, but it had a bunch of paint flakes on it. Some of them were preaty big. about the size of a quarter. looked just like the paint on the supercharger. Is that normal? Other than the paint it was preaty clean. Like it was just cleaned and sprayed down with WD-40. Has any of you heard of any body changing the heads in the truck?

Richard Head 04-24-2008 07:15 AM

That is probably the coating off of the rotors.

wade w 05-04-2008 12:24 AM

I worked on this POS some more today. Man I dont like working on this thing. I would rather take the whole drive train out of the chevelle than change the plugs in this damn thing. Anybody need another truck?

Mike 05-04-2008 12:36 AM

They can be a PITA. Did you get the motor out yet?

Yes they can and no I havent. Im trying to take the heads off without taking the motor out. I havent even got the lower intake off yet. Im still trying to get all the bull s!## out of the way. I just dont see me getting it back together with out another truck to look at. So I can figure out were everything goes.

Richard Head 05-04-2008 05:55 PM

Let us know what you need and we can help.:bigthumb:

Mike 05-04-2008 06:10 PM

I have pictures of the motor at various points of the teardown. When you get to a point your not sure about just let us know.

wade w 05-04-2008 06:44 PM

Thanks guys mostly just venting. Got the lower intake off and one of the valve covers. Started taking stuff off the front. I would like to delete the egr and do the coolant crossover at the rear of the intake while I have it apart. Im trying to take the fanhub off the front of the water pump right now. Is it left handed threads or something? Thanks for any help.

jack a 05-04-2008 06:48 PM

Wade, have you got valve covers for it yet? If not I may know where a set will be soon.

wade w 05-04-2008 06:55 PM

Im not sure yet. Their was a guy on SVT Performance that said he was going to send me a set. But its been a little while. Nor sure were they are comming from.

jack a 05-04-2008 07:00 PM

If you haven't got them before he changes his I will talk to him for you.

wade w 05-04-2008 07:10 PM

Tell me what youve got and I really need to know about the fan clutch.

wade w 05-04-2008 08:33 PM

Never mind I got it. Just incase anybody else needs to know. Its right handed
thread.

wade w 05-04-2008 09:59 PM

Dont you have to change the tune if you delete the EGR? Is this something I can do with the SCT handheld tuner? Has any of you deleted the pcv. That hose that goes on the back of the lower intake looks bad. Its all sucked up looking. Doesnt look like anything could get through it. But the intake was really clean other than the paint flakes. It just seems to me you would be loosing boost through that hole. I saw a thread on svt performance on deleting the PCV. Wasnt to sure about that. I know Im just going on and on. Just have a lot of questions. I'd really like to get it right. So I dont have to worry about it anymore. Thanks for any input.

clubracergt1 05-05-2008 05:24 AM

To the best of my knowledge, you need that hose. It is very common, however to see those collapsed after a bunch of miles. Just be glad you caught it when you did, they usually split and cause a MASSIVE vacuum leak.

It all depends on your tuner and weather or not they allow you to make user adjustment to their tune. More than likely you will have to get a new tune for the truck.

I suspected that mine was bad a few months ago b/c I had a lean bank 1&2 code. Randy and I ended up taking off the stock hose and replacing it with a piece of fule hose. IIRC it was 3/8 fuel hose (correct me if Im wrong on the size Randy)

jack a 05-05-2008 08:09 AM

Wade, if you have the XCAL2 or 3 then you should be able to program it with no probs. If not Mike at Unique Tuning in Hilton Head is a SCT dealer, He can tune it on the dyno also. His # is (843)208-DRAG. Hope that helps.

Not neccesaraly my tuner made it impossible to disable my EGR with my XCALII.

05Saleen 05-05-2008 11:53 AM

Wade. Mike at Unigue Tuning does good work and from what I hear Carter Racing in Sav. Does good work also. They might be closer.

Egr Delete and Engine Removal

Wade Call me on the engine install I have done about 4 now it really isn't that bad If you know a few tricks Also the EGR E-vac and other items can be deleted with the Tune 843-696-7004 Mitch

Lurch 05-05-2008 03:44 PM

Rear Hose

I always install Power steering hose on the lower intake it is really heavy duty and any auto parts store has it. Put a clamp on it and it is good to go. Call me if you have any questions Mitch

wade w 05-05-2008 07:00 PM

Thanks for all the input everybody. Fell like Im getting somewhere.

wade w 05-08-2008 10:35 PM

Few more questions. Do you guys still have your cats? And I remember Randy saying something about taking 2 of the o2 sensors out. Whats it take to do that, and wich ones do you take out?

Mike 05-08-2008 11:17 PM

You don't have to pull the o2 sensors out, most tuners disable them in the tune. I have no cats. Most people get rid of the cats.

Thanks Mike. I know Im going to have to get it retuned. So it doesnt really matter, but I was just wondering if you have to get it retuned to remove the cats.

I bet JDM already has the rear o2s disabled, but you can call them to confirm it.

I might put a muffler on it. Im not getting the whole deal. It costs way to mutch. I dont want it to be as loud as all of yours. The chevelle is bad enough.

Mike 05-08-2008 11:57 PM

If you don't mind the stock muffler sound I would keep it. Not much, if any power from getting an aftermarket muffler.

jack a 05-17-2008 02:36 AM

Wade, hows the Lightning comeing along?

wade w 05-18-2008 01:55 AM

I havent messed with it in a while. I brought some tools home with me this weekend. Hopefully I'll get it the rest of the way apart.

jack a 05-18-2008 08:43 AM

I hope you get it going soon. I will check on the valve covers and let you know. If you need some help call me and I will ride up.

wade w 05-18-2008 06:08 PM

I got the heads off. I've got good news and not so good news. Good news is the short block is not hurt. Drivers side back piston has some small places in it, but nothing bad. I just dont know what to think about the other thing. It allready had 8 thread heads. That would mean they would have to've been replaced right? Mabe the whole motor. Where is the casting # on these things? That also means I blew the plug out of a 8 thread head on a still stock motor. That does not inspire me. Still dont like working on the damn thing. They can take those damn studded bolts and shove them up there. Well you know.

wade w 05-18-2008 09:25 PM

OK I might be wrong about the 8 thread heads. I thought they were because they looked the same in the combustion chamber. I had inserts put in all of the plug holes so I cant really tell.

wade w 05-30-2008 07:11 PM

I orderd a Ford racing cylinder head changing kit from summit yesterday. (thursday). Im hoping it will be here tomorow. Anyway if it does I'll start putting it back together. I still need some valvecovers.

wade w 06-21-2008 02:20 PM

Went to a u-pull it junk yard today and got the valvecovers. They cost me a whole 15 dollars, and I had to take them off. It seemed a little strange to me.
Most of the cars there looked fine. No body damage. There was a old SHO car right next to the one I was pulling the valvecovers off of. It looked fine. Still had the yamaha motor and it was a 5 speed car. Saw a lot of neat stuff out there , but damn it was hot. I saw a few V8 explorers out there (I know they have the good heads) but all of them had been taken.

dkbmxer002 06-21-2008 03:08 PM

which yard did you go to?

wade w 06-21-2008 03:39 PM

I dont know the name of it. It was over were 516 runs into 204 back toward down town. You know the getto section. By the way Paul. found the ssr site.

dkbmxer002 06-21-2008 04:43 PM

ahhh ok, yeah that yard isn't bad... i went there a few days ago and found some little things.. i am waiting for them to get a bmw with more parts i need.

and i saw, welcome!
