Public Service Announcement:

I've recently seen an increase in law enforcement pulling people over with license plates frames. It is actually against the law in SC to have a license plate frame and they are using it as probable cause to make traffic stops.

Check your tag lights too.

Let me clarify that...snake is partially correct in that license plate frames that COVER the month and year of expiration are illegal and thats the probable cause which initiates the traffic stop. License plate covers also fall into this category. And yes, check your plate lights as well as reverse lights...but we all are doing that anyway before we hit the road...right ?

56-3-1240. Display of license plates; missing plate.
ARTICLE 9. LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION CARDS GENERALLY

License plates issued for motor vehicles must be attached to the outside rear of the vehicle, open to view. However, on truck tractors and road tractors the plates must be attached to the outside front of the vehicle provided that single unit commercial motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating in excess of twenty-six thousand pounds may have the license plate on either the outside front or rear of the vehicle. Every license plate, at all times, must be fastened securely in a horizontal and upright position to the vehicle for which it was issued so as to prevent the plate from swinging. The bottom of the plate must be at a height of not less than twelve inches from the ground in a place and position clearly visible as provided in Section 56-5-4530, and it must be maintained free from foreign materials and in a clearly legible condition. No other license plate, lighting equipment, except as permitted in Section 56-5-4530, tag, sign, monogram, tinted cover, or inscription of metal or other material may be displayed above, around, or upon the plate other than that which is authorized and issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles for purpose of validating a plate. It is not unlawful to place a decal on the license plate if it does not obscure any letters or numbers. A motor vehicle owner may attach a trailer hitch to a motor vehicle provided the hitch does not obscure more than two inches of the license plate issued to the motor vehicle. It is unlawful to operate or drive a motor vehicle with the license plate missing and a person who is convicted for violating this section must be punished as provided by Section 56-3-2520.

Quick question....the horizontal mounted thing....Does that apply to bikes? And what about the gangstas with the diagonal plates in the tailgates and stuff?

snakeplissken 11-12-2008 03:35 PM

Just to be clear, I'm not saying LE is going to write a ticket for a license plate frame. It just gives them probable cause to make a traffic stop and start sniffing around for other things.

Especially if you are driving a fast car.

Take it for what it's worth.

Well I am not a fan of diagonal tags. But it isn't all "gangster" lol.

I had a license plate frame on my red truck. Even had an AFTERMARKET non OEM tag light as well. And tag was on drivers side in the tailgate and I never got pulled over for it.

BUT. I do know that the bottom of your license plate must be a MINIMUM of 12"s above the ground though, as in Goose Creek that is a $220+ ticket right off the bat.
