Custom Driveshafts locally?
There was a discussion a while back, whether it was here or charleston racing...not quite sure...but people were talking about a local company in N Charleston that could make custom aluminum driveshafts and stuff...anybody have their name/#. I 99% sure my driveshaft is out of wack on my car...it hates 90mph and up :twisted:

could be out of vibration. Just pick up another one from junkyard and you will be fine. But I will look through some business cards. Because I have a place that does that. Cheaper if you get an aluminum one from a p-up or aerostar van and they cut it to fit etc.

I forgot. Does it still have the vibration weight on the rear end?

I have no idea Jr. I narrowed it down b/c it started out at about 87ish, I pushed the clutch in and let the drivetrain slow down, and it felt like it was no where near as bad, so then I put it in 4th to make the drivetrain go faster then when it was in 5th and it go worse. My thought process is, if my tranny shifts perfect and gives me 0 issues, and doesnt do this at a slower speed, it cant be the tranny. Its not the rear end b/c I pushed the clutch in and it went away for the most part, so it has to be the drivetrain b/c when I spun the driveshaft faster, it got worse.
Odd thing is, I dont ever remember noticing this in a 1st/2nd gear blast when im spinning it at 5500 rpms...so why at 2500rpms? If Im gonna run road courses and stuff, then I gotta get this fixed...so any help would be appreciated :) |
Does it have the ugly weight thing hanging off the front/bottom off the pumpkin? You won't notice it at slower speeds. I didnt on the fox. not until got it up there at highway speeds

That is the piece I am talking about. Without that it will also cause the same problem you are describing. |
Yes the piece Jr is referring to is for weight balance and keeps the drivetrain from vibrating . I removed it on my old Cobra and noticed the vibration at higher speeds . I think they call it a dog bone or some crap like that because that's what the shape of it resembles .
If your still wanting to do the driveshaft Darryl knows someone that does it because he had to have it done on the LTD . He's in Reynolds GA right now when he gets back I'll ask him the name of the place that does it . |

What years/ application is the driveshaft? I'll keep my eyes open if you want to try swapping a stock on in.

my car is an 87 5.0 with a T-5, basically 87-93 and probably 94/95 are the same

Hmm, here is something else to maybe consider.
Properly balanced wheels? Undo your driveshaft and turn it 180 degrees. On newer mustangs this is sometimes the fix. Who knows on the fox. (which would be a "cheap" fix maybe) Did you notice this before or after you replaced suspension pieces? And morey is right. that is the place I have the card for. |
You can also check your wheels for any thrown weights.

this was the first time I'd ever had hte car over 80mph...first real time on the interstate actually. And I had the wheels balanced not to long ago, so I doubt its that. Stupid mesh wheels make it impossible to see the weights

well since its either the wheels or the d/s, I have a friend letting me borrow his stock 97 cobra wheels/tires, if the vibration stops then I know i got a bent or out of balance rim, if it continues I will be purchasing an FRPP driveshaft as the "joint and clutch" place quoted me $400ish to make an aluminum when I got get an FRPP for $269 to my door.

This will sound stupid but will the aluminum driveshaft hold more pressure?

Im not to sure, plenty of big HP cars use them, the FRPP units are balanced at a higher rpm about 10 to 15lbs lighter....Im under the impression that it really smooths out the drivetrain and gives a little quicker throttle response...I hope to match it at some point with an alum flywheel as well...combined should get rid of about 25lbs of rotational mass on the drivetrain which should make a nice overall difference.
I'll probably do the flywheel sooner then I want b/c the flywheel I have no, even after I messed with adjustment, doesnt really grab to hard, so its definitely not going to be able to handle my planned future mods :( I think its a aftermarket stock replacement...which means it doesnt handle much at all |
At a stock clutch can hold some abuse. lol But not for long. Remember also the stock t-5 is rated for 300ftlbs of tq. I know stock amount. But can handle that and some more at REAR WHEELS. Just a heads up.
