4.0 sohc explorer engine

truck belongs to girl i work with. her boyfriend tried changing timing chain and tensioner. he put it back together. wont start or run.

they asked my advise, i asked if they have valve timing correct. i dont think they do. went and looked at this mess today and i would like to know how you figure out where valve timing is in relation to the crank. there is a shaft that runs thru the engine and somehow, if you take the bolt out of the cam sprocket(not really cam sproket but shaft sprocket i guess) it will free wheel.

i figure your supposed to set the engine on TDC before you start this job and everything turns out fine but if that didnt happen, then what?

guess i can spin the valve gear till both valves are closed on the 1 cylinder but is there a more precise way of getting valve timing correct?

does it even sound like i sorta know what i'm trying to ask here?

about to send you a pm

I was under the understanding that the over head cam Ford motors like that were interference motors. So if they turned it over and the timing wasn't fairly close, there are probably some bent valves. Not familiar with the 4.0, but the 4.6 32 and 16 valve motors, you will bend valves if they are not correct. You might want to send Gerald a PM, he timed the 32 valve motor when Jeff rebuilt it for the mach 1...:bigthumb:

You are correct, Darryl. The 4.0 SUCK is a valve bender. You usually know right away, though, if that happened. Worked at a shop where somebody got it way wrong, once.

I would do a compression test first before anything:bigthumb:

On the 4.0l it takes a special procedure, and also a special tool to line everything up, this is a cridical procedure if not really mech. inclined probally bent some valves, call me and i will get you the procedure if you want

Already sent him the procedure, this morning. May need help locating the tools, though.

Darryl Buckner 02-24-2009 03:47 PM

If they are the same tools, I have the Ford cam tools for the 32 and 16 valve 4.6...:bigthumb:
