whats a good base timing to start with on a carb 302

That depends on how much advance is available.

im running a msd dist so i guess as much as possible? i just need a good number to start with. Its a new motor just got running and i wanted to be sure i am in a good area

10 degrees base if you have 25 degrees of advance. 14 base if 21 of advance. I'm not sure of the Distributer you have but you can adjust the advance and how quickly it advances on every MSD I have had. Of course you can lock it out at 32 to 36 depending on what the engine likes best.

What he said, I ran mine at 34-36 locked out with it was n/a.
