how hard is rear main seal on a 99 4.6 auto?
got the 99, it's leaking more than i thought
guess I gotta fix it :Finger2: |
PITA if your talking about the rear main, you have to pull the tranny and engine oil pan to get access to the plate that the seal is mounted in.

ah, i think the tranny is gonna need rebuilt anyways.
it is, what it is.... |
On a 4.6 you only need to pull the transmission and the flexplate. No need to pull the pan like on a pushrod engine Ford. The seal just goes in a sub housing that bolts to the back of the block. The oil pan joint line is way below having anything to do with the seal. Just take a small drill bit and drill 2 small holes in the metal seal rim 180 degrees apart so that you can screw in a couple of medium size sheet metal screws in order to grab them with some dikes and pry the seal out.
I have never seen a leak from the sub housing to block joint, just mainly the rear seal. Good luck fixing your leak. |
