it all depends.. but in all reality these cars are turbo from the factory.
trying to answer you questions tho.
honestly one of the most efficent motors is a honda k20( i may catch hell for this. it makes 200whp and is a 2.0 liter. it has of of the best flowing heads from the factory. the cfm it moves from the factor is stagering. most imports with 1mm over valves and ported/polished heads still can not make the cfm rates a k20 rsx tyep s does..
now the reason i posted the above. their are k24/k20 hybrid motors that make 300 na wheel yes it cost but they do it..
in the racing world its ls1/smc 5.0 ect... in japan its a bit diffrent.. u have the 4g63,2jz,rb ect ect.
u are talking inline 6 motors that are 2.5-3.0 and most 4cyl are 2.0 with a turbo friendly compression 8.5:1
the normal 2.0 liter turbo from factor is 220hp.. and the 6cyl stuff is gentelman rated at 280... now that is the gentelman rated number and understand their is laws in japan with production numbers.. so they over build and restrict.. ( most of the i6 turbo motors makes more than 280whp in stock trim.. its advertised power)
afew bolt on boost controler, exhaust, ic.. u are talking 300whp with basically nothing on the 4cyl.. the i6 motors are more in the 400-500 range with minimal bolt ons.
its like header,cam/cams,intake,exhaust,reflash in the ls1/modern motors..
now realize most of these performance imports are lighter than most domestics. power to weight plays a big part.
now strip a turbo motor and u have a complete dog.. it has low compression and is designed to work around forced induction. now matter how efficant they are a na motor can only move so much air. volumetric efficancy/static load/cfm/and fluid dynamics play a major roll...along with gearing
so the answer is no. a non turbo 2.0 import will not need slicks.. but on the same note does a v6 mustang or 3.8l formula firebird? even go as far as a gt mustang or a ws6.. in reality u can go fast on radials or a good street tire.
now lets speak of these hondas... their are k20/k24 hybrid motors out their in na trim making 300whp and cutting 10 sec passes...to me that is damn impressive. yes they run 11:1 compression but they are also built as an na car..
turbo's/superchargers are one of the best ways of getting performance out of any vehicle.
think of a 5.0 on 8.5:1 compression.. it proably would be a dog. with stock gears.
