Default Starter/Cranking issue

Im having an issue with cranking my pos. It spins over, but sounds like there's a bad spot in the flexplate. Put a new starter and flexplate in, and still does it . It sounds like shit trying to turn over!

Spinning it over without the ignition on does ok, but has little "hickups" of power to the starter it seems. Turn the ignition on and it doesnt want to turn over much at all. I do the spin the engine then hit the ignition switch to fire it up.

Timing is at 34*, 11.5:1 windsor, 157 tooth flexplate, c4 trans, MSD 7al-3. Ive hooked up the start retard on the ignition and the car wont even fire up with it on so I unhooked it.

The starter is an OEM 93 5.0 mustang starter. I was told that'd be what I need for my application. Is this wrong? What are most guys running with a c4 small bell transmission?

There is 2 ga wire from the battery to the sylenoid, and 0 gauge ground for the battery to the frame. Im just lost as to what the issue could be. Any help is greatly appreciated!

that wouldnt have anything to do with the starter not wanting to spin when the ignition is on. And I thought on Fords the starter sits in the bell, no shimming needed?

Yea it acts like the timing is way out of whack, or its a Superman motor. But it's neither.

It is also possible that you're switch wire to the solenoid has a poor connection and causing the solenoid to "bounce". If you get a inconsistent current to the starter, it could cause the gear to retract during starting.

I would try to check the gap between the starter drive and the flywheel first (as Marcus stated) and shim if needed. Then, I would be looking at electrical starting at the solenoid and its wiring.

Its a stock bell. Any idea on the "shimming" of a ford starter? And I may try to bypass my key to see if it sounds any better, which may be correct Jamie. Never thought of that.

And marcus, it was a joke about compression.

You right brandon it cant be a SUPERMAN motor for 1) it would have already been to the track 2) it would be starting like a new car 3)its not fast enough to be a SUPERMAN MOTOR

What is the initial timing? Or, are you running a locked out distributor?

Also, be sure you have good engine grounds to that frame ground. If your starter is getting its ground through block contact and if the engine grounds are inadequate, you'll never see good starting torque.

The dizzy is locked out, and im running a 4 ga engine ground and a motor plate. Im just curious as to why the noise is there. Back to the question on how to shim a ford starter? And like was in the op, it sounds like a bad spot, not a consistent noise. Idk.

Slowgreen don't try to start it any more. You will tear up the flywheel. Call me. I sent you a pm. You don't have to shim a ford starter.

May need to run one of those fancy MSD starter timing retarders. That's seems like a lot of compression and timing to spin over. May not be your problem, but it's gonna be tough on a starter and battery in the long run.
