I'm just curious to see how seriously everyone takes their personal safety when they go racing. I use to just wear a helmet and jeans. I try to wear a long sleeve shirt or sweat-top when I can. I know some people think it's goofy to wear fireproof clothing unless you're running 7's, but I will be taking my safety more seriously from now on when I hit the track. I will be wearing my helmet (even if the track doesn't mandate it), fire-retardant racing shoes, Nomex full-length underwear (top/bottom), Nomex gloves, and Nomex socks. That should give me a moderate margin of safety without going all out on a $250 Multi-Layer Nomex suit. There's a few more things I could do to be safer, but these little things should reduce the risk some.
What stuff do you wear? |

Double layer nomex pants, double layer nomex jacket, neck brace, helmet, nomex gloves, and retardant shoes. And boy does it suck in the summer, but I cannot think of a worse way to die than being burnt to death.

Yep. All the fire protection in the world won't save you from getting smashed up.
These will though

I don't wear any protective gear b/c I can see the other cars taillights the whole way up the track, I guess that's one of the benefits of having a really SLOW car!!!!

Last week I was in shorts, t-shirt, sandles, and no helmet. You can do that when you have a slow truck.

You have all this fire retardant clothing. Do you have a Fire extinguisher??? Most over looked item that could really save you or your truck. Roll cage is definately something worth investing in......Better seat belts is another. Don't see anyone with a chute yet! That could help if you brake a brake line!

Spencer,
For us L guy's, generaly just a helment is all we add. This is the way I'm leaning right now. 1. Cage 2. Race seat or seats 3. Race belt/harness with cross bar on cage or reinforced anchor points 4. Better front brakes I am trying to attend an event that will have some L's with the cage in so I can see if I can get my big butt in to drive. Along with these, a track with a good tech. inspection an upgraded flywheel and balancer will also be needed. So far I have not been called on anything but I would rather be safe. You and others as government property need to be extra safe to allow me and others to get drunk, talk(post) crap, and be stupid. Thank you

Only a helmet and long sleeves at this point. I'm sure it's time to start thinking about some more serious gear.
