If it's not obvious I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to working on vehicles.
So here's the thing, I have a 1993 Silverado Extended Cab with 211k miles on it. As it seems it will be a while til I can think about upgrading I need to make this truck last. While I have some dough from selling parts I want to do any preventive maintenance I can on it. I thought about doing a full complete tune up, replacing spark plug wires, dist cap, rotor, all filters, O2 sensor etc. But the fact is the truck runs really well, starts fast, no skipping, bogging, hesitating. One thing is, the "Check Engine" light comes on periodically and then goes off. Advance Auto can't read it cause it's OBD I. I don't know if it's one of those automatic thing that is mileage based or if there is actually a specific cause. The only other thing is that it seems to use more fuel than it should, it's not outrageous but I'm sure it could be better. So, I could do an overall part replacement, things like filters should be done I'd imagine but spark plug wires etc. I don't know. Any suggestions? Btw, it's a 5.7L TPI. |

There are no periodic service engine light without cause. You need to jumper the dlc and watch flashes to get code without capable scan tool. However the code will likely be a general code such as "egr system problem" and diagnostics will still need to be done.

It's probably a dirty injector. try changing the fuel filter and run some seafoam through it. I would see what code it has also

I read about checking the code by jumping the connectors, I need a diagram, I can probably find one online.

IIRC, the it's upper two right connectors/holes in the OBD connector under the dash.
put the paper clip in, turn key on, but not crank it. count codes. repeat until you get the count right. in other words, now is a goood time to take it to HHP, and let them pull the codes. it sounds simple

I got this deal a long time ago, it uses a serial port, guess it's not usable now.
![]() ![]() Think HHP can get this ride so it will tote the tires? |

I have the OBD 1 pigtail that hooks to my scan tool. I live just over the river, so let me know if you want to hook up my scanner.

what makes yall think the CEL has anything to do with the TBI system? he says it runs like a top. the injectors are known to go bad, and the FPR but both cause driveability issues.
its the 2 right pins that you jump, code 12 starts the cycle and ends the cycle. |
